I was gonna say imagine if RA ever had JVG's teams...RA never once had a healthy TMAC and Yao together, JVG had them in the playoffs twice, and failed to get to 2nd round. RA took the Lakers to 7 in round 2 w/o Tmac....JVG was a decent coach, but people overlook his coaching deficiencies because of his awesome personality on TV / Radio.
For me, I never wanted him go. I think the lack of playoff success was unfairly put on him, so they decided to go for Adelman(who anyways is a better coach than Van Gundy). We never had the players to make a serious playoff run plus we had two cornerstone players who never came through in crunch time. Plus I might be wrong on this, I think Morey was GM for only 1 year with JVG as coach, and we never had the offensive players we do now to compete as well. Not until we acquired Adelman did Houston see a steady improvement in the type of role players we had.
If I remember correctly, the rockets wanted to start talks on an extension right after the season ended and JVG wanted to wait. Apparently the rockets\Morey didnt want to wait and contacted Adelman, who didnt want to be interviewed unless he got an OK from JVG.
I want JVG like I never wanted him to leave in the first place. That being said, I would prefer Rick to stay. Simply put, Rick is the better coach. However, if Rick goes, it would be great if they got JVG, the man can coach. Only a tier 1 coach like Popovich/Jackson would be a better hire. JVG is a top of the tier 2 coach.
I would definitely prefer to have Adelman over JVG. If Adelman does leave, Van Gundy should be at the front of the line.
If only Adelman and JVG could be co-coaches. If Adelman were to leave JVG would be the best candidate possible, but honestly I remember the days of JVG. The reason we had only two viable offensive options his years was just as much his fault as it was due to the limitations of our role players. If he comes back in he's going to focus on defense again obviously, and while that might return us to respectability, most likely in the top 10 defensively, it's still hard to fathom what he would be doing on the offensive end. The hope is that as he's aged he's grown a little, and maybe now he has a bit more appreciation for coaching a system like Adelman's that is predicated on ball movement and spreading the defense out. Otherwise Rocketball is going to be twice as ugly as it used to be.
Man I miss JVG and his Gundyball. Now that Brickston and Juwon Howard are out of the way, we can see some real sets where, you know, the ball actually ends up in the hoop after the play.
This is how I feel too. I like JVG. It's just his "defense at all cost" and his unimaginative offense had me pull my hair out lots of the time. If Adelman walks, I don't mind having him back. I don't see anyone better than him available out there. (Maybe Sloan is better. But I'd throw up seeing him sitting on our bench.)
JVG would have run Brooks out of town sooner, for his crazy shots and lack of defense. He would have never won the MIP because Lowry would have been starting. That is, if he would have let Morey trade Rafer for Lowry. My coaching preference is Adelman first, JVG second, any other unemployed coach or current assistant distant third.
Losing JVG didn't hurt as much as losing Thibodeau IMO. Turner is not a big name, but he could be an adequate replacement in the short term for Adelman. We need more 2 way players. This could help balance things out on both ends of the floor.
It takes more than two guys to win, especially when you're up against the Jazz. Star Power battle: Tmac and Yao vs Boozer+DERON WILLIAMS Those two matchup pretty evenly I guess you can give the slight edge to Tmac and Yao, but Okur always made Yao his b**** almost every matchup they had. Role Player Battle: Juwon Howard+Rafer Alston+Shane Battier+Luther Head vs Okur+Brewer+Millsap+Kirilenko "Never once reached the 2nd round" is such a generalization. If last year's team fought against the Jazz again what are the chances we'll win in a 7 game series?
Offense ranking last year of Rudy: 14th Offense ranking first year of JVG: 24th JVG is indeed the offense-killer all his detractors say he is.
tweet today johnhollinger John Hollinger Jvg says Stro Swift was biggest disappointment - great guy, but lacked love of gm #ssac
