There is a good chance that Hawk returns to the Packers. Also, Id rather have Cushing and Ryans on the inside...I think they are both better than Hawk.
Should we take a look at vernon gholston? Dude was rated high in his draft don't know why he couldn't do well in the jets defense but maybe a change in scenery will help.
Charles Hill Ramon Walker Demarcus Faggins Howard Green Greg White Ahmad Miller Antwan Peek Keith Wright Curry Burns Dunta Robinson Jason Babin Glenn Earl Vontez Duff Jammal Lord Raheem Orr Travis Johnson CC Brown Kenneth Pettway Mario Williams Demeco Ryans Amobi Okoye Brandon Harrison Zac Diles Antwuan Molden Xavier Adibi Frank Okam Dominique Barber Brian Cushing Connor Barwin Glover Quin Brice McCain Troy Nolan Kareem Jackson Earl Mitchell Daryl Sharpton Sherrick McMannis Look at that list and you tell me you trust the Texans front office to draft to fix the defense.
Texans tender Daniels and Foster, not Pollard [rquoter] Strong safety Bernard Pollard and outside linebacker Zac Diles were among four Texans who were not tendered today, meaning they will become unrestricted free agents when a new collective bargaining agreement is signed. Guard Kasey Studdard, a starter in 2009, and defensive end Tim Bulman, who spent last season on injured reserve, also were not tendered and will become unrestricted. The Texans put a first-round tender on tight end Owen Daniels. Quarterback Matt Leinart received an original tender of a first-round pick because that's where Arizona selected him. The Texans placed second-round tenders on receiver Jacoby Jones, defensive end Mark Anderson and guard Mike Brisiel. Offensive tackle Rashad Butler received a third-round tender. Running back Arian Foster, an exclusive rights player, also was tendered. Under the current collective bargaining agreement between the owners and players, players can't become unrestricted free agents until they have played six years. When the new CBA is signed, unrestricted free agency is expected to return to four years. That means a player like Pollard would have become unrestricted, anyway. When the new CBA is signed and free agency begins, players who were tendered can sign offer sheets with other teams. If the Texans don't match, they'll receive compensation in the form of a tender. For instance, if Brisiel signed with another team, the Texans could match or receive a second-round draft pick[/rquoter]
its moronic to let go of the only guy who is capable of starting at safety on the roster when they have the worst secondary in the NFL and have no one to replace him
So like, do the Texans have ANY idea what they're doing on defense?? Why did we just let our only capable starting safety walk??
The four safeties we have our: Troy Nolan Dominique Barber Torri Williams Antonio Baker As much as we talk about getting a NT, our safety situation is a complete disaster. Weak safety class this year as well.
As I mentioned right after the season. This decision was made long before Wade Phillips got here. The guy quit on Kubiak in week 17. If you remember his last second scratch vs Jacksonville for an injury he didn't mention to anyone all week. He refused to take an injection to even see if it could help him get off the field. Just because Pollard is the best safety the Texans have ever had, doesn't neccessarily make him good. Box safeties are a dime a dozen. The Texans have made a boat load of mistakes the last 5 years. I don't think this is one of them.
For a guy who apparently had coach Kubes' back, he certainly did seem to look out for number 31 that last game. I wish Kubiak would've also quit on the season to get that better draft pick, but I understand why both did what they did. Onward and (hopefully) upward from here....
Who can blame him for quitting on a ****ty coach? Regardless of your feelings about Pollard, getting rid of him without a replacement is just stupid, but what else would we expect from this organization?
I'll never fully understand what went down in that last game. But I do know this. It was pointless (and detrimental) for any Texans starter to be out there killing themselves to win at that point, especially Pollard. The Texans as a whole would've been better off if they had all just laid down and quit. Higher draft pick, no risk of injury to players, etc. So I can't really be mad at Pollard for doing just that, especially when 1) he knew the defensive staff that had brought him in and liked him was toast and 2) he was due to be a UFA at the end of the season.
Oh McNair, thank you for listening to those idiots that will (hopefully) be responsible for another losing season next year. You are letting them burn themselves and I appreciate it.
Exactly. Just look who his competition is. John Busing? Matt Stevens? Glenn Earl? Ramon Walker? And it helps if your safeties can cover a TE every once in a while. Guy routinely made no-names like Zack Miller and Chris Cooley look more like Ozzie Newsome or Shannon Sharpe. But it does make you wonder if this is going to have the same effect of letting another overrated DB go like we did last year. How did that work out for us?
Anyone who really expected Pollard back wasn't paying attention. As much as we needed to lose that last game, you just can't expect a guy that blatantly quit on the team (no matter how meaningless the situation) to be welcomed back. Besides that, Pollard is a dime a dozen like Matt said. The guy made some big plays in coverage in '09, but apparently that was a fluke because he was God-awful this year. His only value is as a blitzing safety, and that's just not enough. I wouldn't be surprised if Butler gets picked up for a 3rd round pick. Also surprised that Jacoby got a 2nd rd tender.
Yeah, it sounds like Dunta to me. Dunta supposedly wasn't any good...he may not have been, but as it turns out, he was hella better than anything on the roster. He pissed everyone off because he didn't act right....and we turned the keys over to Kareem & Co. instead. Dynamite. This organization absolutely blows. I hope this works out for them...but I have zero faith that it will.
Just a quick question, what would it take for the Texans to regain your trust: A) Move up in the draft to select one of the "Top 7" defensive talents: Fairley, Dareus, Bowers, Miller, Peterson, Amukamara, Quinn B) Sign two impact defensive players in FA CB: Asomugha (OAK), Grimes (ATL), Rogers (WAS), Joseph (CIN), or Taylor (PIT) Safety: Weddle (SD) Personally, if I'm Smith/Kubiak, and I'm in full CYA mode (as evidenced by winning the J-ville game), I look to trade away my 2012 first round pick to get another impact player in this year's draft. If you add 2 1st rounders and an early 2nd to this team (probably all on the defensive side), you maximize the possibility that you'll have a job in Houston come 2012. If you fail in 2011, not having a 2012 first round pick will be someone else's problem anyway.
The problem was not letting Dunta walk, but rather not signing a single veteran to play corner. I don't think Dunta was worth anywhere close to what he got, but in hindsight of course everyone is going to hammer the organization for being cheap when they didn't have an alternative. Another year of the franchise tag probably would have been the right way to go with him.
I'll take "B" for $200, Alex. If I'm Smith/Kubiak, I finally quit trying to perpetually build through the draft and get a few guys in here who can actually PLAY on the NFL level NOW. We've been building for the future for a decade now and have nothing to show for it. It's time to stop thinking about the next 10 years and start thinking about TODAY. Schaub, Johnson, and Mario aren't getting any younger. Perpetually building for the future is the philosophy that gets us guys like 10th pick overall bust Amobe Okoye, converted TE playing DE and now OLB Connor Barwin, and "he played for Nick Saben so he must be NFL-ready" Kareem Jackson.
i'm normally with you, but i think the dunta/pollard thing is apples/oranges. they didn't let dunta go after he was on one of the worst defenses of all-time. i don't think our defense was historically bad despite pollard's amazing play. that said, i'm with you to the point where nearly every one of their decisions should be questioned.
