Did you ever try the vegetable dumplings at Ta Hua (especially when they used to be on Post Oak)?

I prefer the Ta Hua ones.

Peking Cuisine near Gessner and 59

It's an unassuming little restaurant, but the food is phenomenal. The people from the Chinese consulate routinely eat there, so that tells you something about the food. It is very often packed and you often have to wait, but it is worth it.

fengs kitchen is quite good, but its expensive

all you have to do is drive by bellaire between gessner and beltway, any place that's packed at 11 at night is almost guaranteed to be good

I don't know if 888 restaurant is the best Chinese Restaurant in Houston, but it has my favorite Chinese dish in all of Houston. You have to ask for the Chinese menu, and it is called sliced fish in clay pot. I don't speak or read any Chinese, but there is an English translation. Problem is........there are two dishes with the English translation: "sliced fish in clay pot." You have to ask for the one served on the white plate. It's like crack.......and as spicy as anything not served "Thai Spicy" at Thai gourmet.

Dang........I want some right now. Be forewarned though..........it will make you rethink the whole "Americanized Chinese is so much more unhealthy than real Chinese food" way of thinking. It seems to be swimming in red oil, but served over rice.............damn, it's some kind of good. My newest splurge.

Not really sure as there are too many to pick from. I have lately been enjoying "Hai Dai" which is a cold pickled kelp salad with sesame oil and hot sauce. For things that might not be so bizarre for American palates I like pot stickers and green onion pancakes. If the Lai Lai people are mentioning is the same Lai Lai that I remember from the 1980's they have really good pot stickers.

FYI things like pot stickers, green onion pancakes and brisket noodle soup are traditionally northern Chinese fare but due to the Communist revolution and so many Chinese fleeing from the north to Taiwan those type of things are now associated with Taiwanese food. If I remember Lai Lai is a Taiwanese restaurant. There is also an international Taiwanese chain called Lai Lai but I don't think the Houston one is part of the chain unless this is a different Lai Lai.

Things like Dim Sum are Cantonese food so if you go to an authentic Cantonese restaurant their pot stickers aren't going to be as good as a Taiwanese or norther Chinese restaurant and if you to one of those you aren't likely to get Dim Sum.

I think I know the dish you are talking about and its a Sichuan dish that is a favorite of my mom's

The Americanized Chinese food, things like egg foo young, is in general more unhealthy because it has been made for American taste, primarily more meat and less vegetables than what you would get in Asia and also a lot more frying than steaming. That said a lot of authentic Chinese food isn't that healthy either as a lot of the food is deep fried in things like coconut oil and uses things like duck fat and fatty pork.

Yuan Ten off Bellaire is the best chinese ive had. Plus, their lunch specials are insane, 4.95 gets you a large dish of food and rice and house soup. Salty spicy fried fish filets, salty spicy fried squid, and their sweet and sour pork is the best ive ever had bar none, and its consistently good. The batter is light and fluffy, and the meat inside is tender and juicy, and never overcooked. They have both the authentic and american style type dishes. We eat there quite a bit, and my wife's parents #1 place. Considering they're both from mainland china and taiwan, they always choose this place to eat their chinese food in houston.

If you made this thread 2-4 years ago, there would have been a lot more input.... A large segment of the BBS no longer bothers to check in I bet.

    I'm just saying.

Except that large segment you are talking probably has no first hand experience with Chinese restaurants in Houston.
