Mario doesn't come across as a very bright guy, but maybe he would be a great coach. I was shocked when the rockets selected Rudy T, and we all know what he did. It's hard for fans to know if someone with no Head coaching experience would be a good coach, because we haven't seen that person do anything other than sit on the bench during games. Mario was a good player, but I have no idea if he can coach.
I did not participate in the poll because I think RA will be back. However, if i would have participated I think Mario would be my guy.
Interesting question. I think Rick is a good coach, but he's a poor fit with Morey. His offense is certainly potent, given the point we're putting up with the relative lack of offensive talent we have, but it takes too long to learn. Except for Chuck and Scola, we've turned over the entire roster since Rick has taken over, and I expect this trend of high turnover to continue as Morey constantly seeks upgrades. We need a coach who will implement an offense that's easier to pick up because we can expect a constant influx of new players. We also need an offense more amenable to a wide variety of players, since there's no telling who good trade opportunities will make available. A guy like T-will appears to have a ton of talent but can't get on the court because he's an iso player, not a read-and-react type. The other advantage of this is that our young guys will be able to demonstrate value sooner, making them more appealing in trades. The dribble-drive motion offense, in particular, seems like it would be a good fit. I don't know who would be the best coach to implement such a scheme, but I'd prefer we didn't go with one of Adelman's disciples.
Out of this list I'd say turner he would be good to develop these young players, but my choice is Steal this man before Pop retires
Why would van gundy come back here, aside from living in houston, I don't see why'd he want to coach the rockets again.
It's not entirely bad luck IMO. IT was pretty obvious that it was a clearly flawed strategy to rely in 2 superstars known by being injury-prone. And I warned about this several years ago at RealGM forum, and several fans got pissed of because of me stating it. Besides, in a team with no fancy city to attract players, the way to go is the Spurs way. Relying in intelligent/team players (Duncan, Manu (Parker doesn't fit such profile, but even then, you notice how TD and Manu adatped to take advantage of his coring ability) and team-oriented role players with at least decen Basketball IQ.... That's why that franchise like Rockets, should pursue more players in the style of Scola, Chuck and Battier, rather than Brooks style, wether if it's at superstar or at role player level.
If you think a team of nice guys will get us over the top then we'll end up like the pathetic Texans. Players like Aaron Brooks are difference makers, you'd pass up a talented player for Shane battier type player then we'll definitely suck for a very long time
Lawrence Frank is a candidate. He is well thought of, despite what happened in the last few years in New Jersey.
