OPETH IS F***ING AWESOME!!! i love that they can go from brutal to lush on a dime - and that singer has incredible range - from death growl to pastoral folk. this song will make you lose control of your bowels. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kenyBvpL0qQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kenyBvpL0qQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
if you like norwegian black metal check out these guys. liturgy, from nyc. i saw them recently and it blew my mind - ive never seen a drummer as fast as this dude - its very ambient, fast, loud and scary - exactly what you want out of your black metal. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rUH3PLqibfY&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rUH3PLqibfY&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object> <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0kjz0LVA4Qs&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0kjz0LVA4Qs&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Not sure how hard you're asking, but Them Crooked Vultures rock pretty hard. If that's too hard though, check out Feist.
check out steel panther. they might be a considered a joke band, but i just saw them live and they kicked ass.
Only metal bands I've listened to in the last five years. Torche Mastodon Baroness Spoiler <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Fm1lo7H-_jk&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Fm1lo7H-_jk&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8qii59-7JAM&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8qii59-7JAM&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object> <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/s6WGNd8QR-U&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/s6WGNd8QR-U&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

I will second Every Time I Die. Good stuff there. I also used to love me some In Flames. Demon Hunter is a decent metal band. Not sure if they fit the bill of what you're looking for, though.
sorry for bumping an old thread, but between the buried and me's new EP "the parallax hypersleep dialogues" needs some sort of mention/recommendation. after a few listens i think this one might surpass "alaska" as my favorite from btbam. it's the first of two conceptual albums from my favorite prog metal band ever. (these are the 3 tracks on the EP) <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/2_YEHfQoNsc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/M1mHde3vkYA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/cgrQvQOFCkY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
The only "newer" metal bands I've given any listen to are Mastodon, The Sword, and DragonForce. Beyond them, I'm listening to the same awesome stuff I've always listened to: Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, old Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Motorhead, Queensryche, etc. I will now proceed to submit this post and immediately think of a thousand other great bands who have been rocking my face off for most of my life.
Ditto... maybe throw in The Sword and Dragonforce just for fun. On a related note, it seems that Baroness is playing Austin the weekend of the Free Press Summerfest, so hopefully they'll visit Houston and be one of the "surprise" additions for the festival. Also ditto. I still profess to be a metalhead, but for the last five years, 95% of my music has been indie pop or electronica. I am ashamed... or maybe not. I think this is a bad era for rock/metal. Who knows whether it'll be revived in the coming years, but it certainly feels dead and/or stagnant right now. Adult swim has a great metal compilation out (free download at their site. warning: the music player is on autoplay in case you're at the workplace) with songs from Isis, Pelican, Boris, Kylesa, and other notable modern acts. It's a good representation of the best that modern metal has to offer. It's decent, but unfortunately, it just doesn't excite me like this stuff used to...
I'm not really into the metal scene but I've heard some good songs ever since I got pandora. Just put in like one or two songs per station and you'll hear a lot of good ****.
