Sounds like just more rhetoric, but this time it's even more loaded.

Iran president sees "countdown" to Israel's end
    Sun Jun 3, 2007 3:18PM EDT

EHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's president said on Sunday the Lebanese and the Palestinians had pressed a "countdown button" to bring an end to Israel.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who triggered outrage in the West two years ago when he said Israel should be "wiped off the map", has often referred to the destruction of the Jewish state but says Iran is not a threat.

"With God's help, the countdown button for the destruction of the Zionist regime has been pushed by the hands of the children of Lebanon and Palestine," Ahmadinejad said in a speech.

"By God's will, we will witness the destruction of this regime in the near future," he said. He did not elaborate.

ran often praises the Palestinians for what it says is their resistance against Israeli occupation. Tehran also described the war last summer between Hezbollah in Lebanon and Israel as a victory for the Iranian-backed group.

"If you make a mistake and create another war against the oppressed Lebanese nation, this time the angry ocean of the nations of the region will remove your rotten ... roots from the region," the president said in another speech on Sunday night.

Ahmadinejad's speeches were made ahead of ahead of Monday's anniversary of the death in 1989 of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, whose words Ahmadinejad echoed when he called for Israel to be "wiped off the map".

The president's comments caused consternation in Israel and the West, which also fear Iran is seeking to build an atomic arsenal under cover of a civilian nuclear power programme, a charge Tehran denies.

Although Ahmadinejad has said Iran is not a threat to Israel, Iranian officials have said Tehran would respond swiftly to any Israeli attack. Some analysts have speculated Israel could seek to knock out Iran's atomic sites.

This guy does so much to give Islam a bad name in the West. You see, there's no counter balance. You don't see Muslim leaders like Mubarak standing up and saying - the way this guy thinks is backwards and doesn't represent Muslims!

And Muslims wonder why people are forming bad opinions. Maybe it isn't just the media's fault.

How is this different than any other politician does. Ranting are down, lets blame illegal immigrants or the war on terror. He is doing what any politician would blame someone else for your problems.

i get yout point about blaming someone else, but i think that there is a significant difference in wanting immigration reform and completely whipping out an entire country

Also, George Bush gives Christians a bad name and Olmert gives Jews a bad name. Kalam, however, does not give Hindus a bad name. Figures...

Wait, you mean they are heads of government and NOT heads of their religion. Damn... I'll get it right night time.

Does anyone seriously believe that Ahmadinejad will wipe out Israel?

Ahmadinejad is a blowhard but even though he's the President he doesn't have the final say on launching an attack of that scale and I doubt both he and the Mullahs are stupid enough to attempt something that will end up being much much worse for Iran.

It's naive to think that his words don't have any impact on 1.3 billion Muslims and the other 5 billion humans on this earth.

You have a major Islamic leader - one of the highest profile ones, preaching anti-semitism, yet there is no voice by any muslim leader preaching peace and tolerance, and condemning this fool.

How can people be surprised that people are forming negative opinions of Islam. It's just naive to think that it won't happen.

    Isn't Abdul Kalam muslim?

Kind of crazy to think about it there... their president is Muslim, the Prime Minister is a Sikh, and the head of the majority party is a Hillary-esque Italian lady.

I wasn't aware Ahmedinijad was a religious leader...thanks for the enlightment.

They don't. People have already formed their opinions about Israel a loooooooong time ago, and a guy that will be out of office in a few years hardly registers on the radar. He's the leader of the only major Shi'ite state in the world, a state that in the latest pan-Arab poll was cited by the majority of Arabs as the second biggest "threat" to the Arab nation ("Zionist-Crusador coalition" came in first).

    fixed it for ya...

Who's surprised? Who cares might be the more relevant question here. It's difficult to take the ignorant seriously (not talking about you, necessarily), but I know it's shocking that most Muslims don't live a guilt-ridden life.

The perception is historical in nature, it's embedded in the collective subconscious (theirs and ours). Modern day events only 'reaffirm' what each side always suspected; a good percentage of Arabs think the West is on another 'Crusade' and a good number of my fellow citizens fear Islam is hell-bent on destroying America (Islamophobia is what some like to call it).

There's historical 'distrust' there that will never go away; it's been a thousand years in the making. Each side has legitimate grievances, but fear mongering is a way of life for most of us...

Did anyone seriously believe Hitler was going to invade Poland (and Russia, and France, and...)?

Apparently not enough enlightment - you've missed the whole point.

Ahmedinijad doesn't have to be a religious leader to have influence on public perception on Islam. People don't play by the same constructs and rules you do.

Sorry, I was distracted by how far off you're from having one...

Alright, it has been fun 'debating' with you, I don't intend to make a habit of it.
