Why? If I don't think JVG is some kind of super head coach, what does it matter to you?

I haven't said a single thing about "not liking JVG." Just a few days ago, I was giving him some props. I haven't asked for his head *at all* (this season), unless Phil Jackson wanted the job. Heck, there is an outside possibility he will manage >51 wins, and deep into the second round.

I answered a question, which was "Of the coaches available, who would you have preferred?" When asked to elaborate, I did.

No offense, guys, but why shouldn't EDC have the right to his opinion? Is it really going to matter that much?

And in all fairness, EDC, to play the devil's advocate, you say it's only about your opinion, yet you try to pass it off as factual, as in "the facts prove that there are many better coaches out there than JVG." I don't think people would have an argument with you if you simply said, "Look, I just don't like the guy, but he's doing a decent job." When you start trying to use the championship-caliber argument or "statistically speaking" or "the 'experts' predicted a 50-win season and anything less is a disappointment'", do you really think that's objective? C'mon, you're picking and choosing convenient points to suit your contention. Maybe YOU are personally setting a 50-win goal as your benchmark for JVG, but I'm not. Maybe you feel a championship-caliber coach is what we need, but on that logic, no one would ever get promoted to a manager because they've never "been" a manager. Statistically speaking, JVG had a winning record before we hired him, he's maintained a winning record since, and so far, he's been improving week by week.

IN MY OPINION, Van Gundy is a very good coach and has done a great job. And all that matters to anyone is the first three words.

    edc, here's your "revisionist history"

This is what you do. First you take a coach that has already won a title and they say, "They're a championship caliber coach."

I say, amazing insight! How did you ever think of that?!

Now, if those coaches that you listed (the ones that already won rings) never got the chance to prove they could win a title, they would have never been "championship caliber" in the first place.

All coaches need a chance to prove themselves. JVG will be a "championship caliber" coach once he wins a few rings, don't ya think? You can't just bash them for not winning a title, yet not giving them the chance to prove it.

Now, as far as D'Antonio...sigh. You are again, using the OBVIOUS to make your decisions. So, D'Antonio is a "better" coach, but Nash, Amare and Marion and Johnson don't have anything to do with it? Huh?

Kinda like JVG having TMac/Yao. Or Phil having Jordan/Pip or Shaq/Kobe. Or Pop having Duncan/Robinson/Manu and Parker....

There are a lot of good coaches that could get a title if they had the right players. JVG is one of them. He's seen as "good" around the league. "Great" is only attained once they win a title. It's partially a fair perception and partially an unfair perception since it takes a lot to fall into place to win a title; the right players, chemistry, strategy, offense, defense and a little luck.

Your PREFERENCE changes day to day. First it's "can't coach offense" then it's "average coaching" then it's "no rings" then it's "must be former players"....

The PREFERENCE just changes, as long as it's NOT JVG.

If we pulled out an old article that JVG played in the NBA, you'd just say..."Yeah, but he only scored 5ppg." You'll just change your story as it suits you.

    Anti-Amare-bball-fan34: I prefer past NCAA players! I hate Amare! He's a highschooler!

Go_Suns32: But Amare is playing excellent!

Anti-Amare: So? I feel that former NCAA players are better, IMO. It's my preference.

(Real reason: Amare didn't sign an autograph for you, and you haven't forgiven him for it since!)

Did JVG shun you edc? Do you need a huh? Or maybe you called into 610 Radio, asked him a question, and he slammed you! No?

Because the coach is the one that puts the ball in the hoop! Everyone knows that!

And Phil was just having a bad-shot-day, that year! ;) Jordan? Who's that? Heck, Phil could have won it all even wihout Pippen! All Phil needs is Danny Ferry and Tex!

    (1) It seems to offend you so much that I find JVG an average to slightly-above-average NBA head coach. I have reserved "championship caliber" for coaches that win one. What else is there to call it? That's where "super head coach" comes from.

    (2) Every fan of this board doesn't have to agree with you. The sooner you learn that simple fact, the better.

    (3) Afraid? nope. I thought JVG would bring down the hammer if T-Mac tried to open things up. I was wrong. That still doesn't mean I have to think he is more than an average to slightly-above-average NBA head coach.

Oh, I see. Hmmmm, and they were "non-super duper coaches" before they won the ring. I see. Kinda like it's good when we win? And bad when we lose? Kinda like that logic?

    Brilliant!

"What I want from JVG" this season hasn't changed one bit since the T-Mac trade was completed.

"Who I would've preferred (and why)" is an entirely different question, and only tangentially related.

What YOU WANT is the same thing that every Rocket fans WANTS!

But your stipulations are soooo extreme, due to "personal reasons," that it blinds you into to seeing the reality.

Who YOU prefered is BASED on your WHY. Which is PERSONAL!

52 wins an deep into the second round is hardly "sooo extreme." Demanding a championship this year...that would be extreme.

Nothing personal about it. I preferred Del Harris to Jeff Van Gundy. I preferred Mike Dunleavy to Jeff Van Gundy. All three guys had comparable resumes, and two of them had been Rockets, and had shown some trackrecord for coaching offensive talent. That doesn't mean I want either of them to take his job right now, but *at the time*, those would've been my choices.

I wasn't talking about the 52 wins and 2nd round appearance. That falls into the catagory of what *eveyrone wants."

I was talking about your extreme, sneaky, ever changing anti-JVG posts. You say it doesn't change, but it does. Because you try to find reason to find fault in JVG. You try real hard. That's different than *wanting* "52 wins and deep into the 2nd round."

You just say that to make yourself *seem* consistent. But if you wouldn't try so hard to undermine everything that JVG is wrong about, and how other coaches are right about, then it wouldn't be *sooooo extreme.*

That's the "extreme" I talk about. And it's fueled by your "why preference" that you talked about above.

You can say, "bad offense" or "former player" or "no ring" as reasons for you "why." But your "why" is really just a personal grudge for something unknown.

Did JVG kick your dog? If not, then post some CONSTRUCTIVE (reasonable) suggestions on how to improve this team. No more snide JVG is "average" comments. Or "Phil must be hired!" or "JVG can't coach offense."

By the way, *at that time* Larry Brown was MY choice. Not Dunleavy. I wanted JVG over Dunleavy. But since we didn't get Brown, the more I thought about it, the more I felt it could work.

Now you've gone off the deep end. I'm sorry that I don't consider JVG much more than an average (or slightly-better-than-average) quality NBA head coach. I'm sorry he wasn't my choice at the time. I'm sorry that he has done nothing as head coach of the Rockets to change my mind. That is my opinion, and I am entitled to it. If you want to anoint him the second-coming of Red Auerbach, that is your opinion, and you are welcome to it. You would be wrong, but there is no shame in that ;)

But we are not doing that. I said above that he was considered "good." And perceptions change to "great" once they've won a title; fair or not fair.

So, there's no "Red Auerbach" comparsion going on here. But I'm sure you *want* him to be "Red." That's your requirements (hence the Phil or bust posts).

The irony of all this is that EDC is the one poster Van Gundy would agree with the most regarding the evaluation of his coaching ability and performance.

EDC, one question: how come the only time you post is regarding Van Gundy? I mean, it's extremely noticeable. Just curious.

I'm happy for you. I disagree, but no one is forcing everyone on this board to goose-step to JVGs drum.

Believe what you want. I have no personal feelings at all about JVG.
