If everything broke right. Whose a current player u would comp him to? I like him too although I never watched him play. Just read some scouting reports.
https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id...t-analysis-winners-losers-day-1-preview-day-2 Kiley McDaniel (ESPN prospect guy) seems to have really liked Houston’s first 2 picks. https://www.mlb.com/astros/news/astros-2026-draft-picks?t=mlb-draft-coverage Pendino said the same thing about every pick (“we were really surprised he was available”). I think Hughes, Radel, and Mendes could all be in AA by August 2027 and in the majors by July 2028. Keon Johnson only struck out 3 times his entire senior year of HS. After sleeping on it, I am more positive on this class so far. I still hope there’s room for one more significant (top 100 draft talent) overslot pick. But Houston came away with 5 of the top 120 talents in the draft imho, 2 very likely (relative to other pitching prospects) big league starting pitchers, a very likely quality big league bat, and 2 good HS prospects they can mold. If they can coax more power out of Johnson he will be a big league regular, and Peterson is a lot like Xavier Neyens.
Are there any of these guys they will have trouble signing? I think Peterson was one that was mentioned somewhere it would take a lot to get him.
No. The Astros would have an agreement in place for any of the 1-10 round picks, before selecting them. Exceptions would be rare and make the rule.
The Astros start off Day 2 with... Round 5, Pick 153: Gavin Eddy, RHP, UC-Berkeley 6-5, 225 righty with a low-90s fastball and a power slider with a gyro shape. Two-pitch guy without a real third pitch, maybe they'll try to see if he can throw harder as a pro and add a usable third pitch in the process. 14 starts, 6-3, 2.87 ERA, 84.2 IP, 72 H (7 HR allowed), 33 R (27 ER), 21 BB, 94 K, 1.10 WHIP, .229 opponent average Also learned that Brett Wallace is Cal's hitting coach.
Round 6, Pick 182: Michael Addari, RHP, Illinois State Listed as a senior, but he's actually a redshirt junior. Transfer from Michigan State. Mid-90s sinker and a sweeper who tested well at the MLB draft combine. 14 appearances (11 starts), 4-4, 2.27 ERA, 67.1 IP, 58 H (3 HR allowed), 31 R (17 ER), 22 BB, 73 K, 1.10 WHIP, .243 opponent average
Pitchers Houston has drafted so far: 6'5" 6'1" 6'5" 6'6" https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2026-mlb-draft-day-1-recap/ Fangraphs actual prospect writer wrote the recap for Houston and it is positive.
Looks like the Astros went way underslot with Durnin in the 4th round and now with these last couple of picks. Probably need to save up some bonus money to sign Peterson.
Only disappointing thing so far is that these guys' names aren't overly unusual. We need a pick with a name that will sound the @Buck Turgidson alarm soon...
6 RD Pick 182 -- Michael Addari Illinois State (IL) USA P R/R 4YR SR -- 6' 6" 225lbs DOB:06/01/04 $361.90k https://goredbirds.com/sports/baseball/roster/michael-addari/15142 Another big boy pitcher!
I think I'm in favor of MLB bringing back the conference call feed for these mid-late rounds and then let Callis and Mayo jump in every 20 picks or so with a blurb about someone who was drafted within those 20 picks that they found interesting. Their trying to analyze every single pick in these first few rounds kind of drags out the process.
Feels like they've been targeting some larger pitchers in the draft the past few years (Parker Smith/Cole Hertzler in 2024, Gabel Pentecost/Nick Potter/Kellan Oakes in 2025) You must be at least 6-2, 200 pounds, or both, to pitch.
Round 7, Pick 211: Bryan Carney, RHP, University of Olivet 6-7, 205 pitcher from a Division III school in Michigan with under 1100 students, so @Buck Turgidson, that is a real school. The town of Olivet is about an hour southwest of Lansing. Second straight year that the Astros have gone to a small college in the Midwest to take a pitcher. He's the first Division III player drafted by the Astros since 2019, when they picked Danny Cody in the 17th round out of Baldwin Wallace University in Ohio. Fastball up to 98, slider best secondary. Callis said he didn't pitch in the regular season, but... he did, and he was probably the best pitcher in Division III. Carney's 122 strikeouts and 0.79 WHIP led D3, and his 1.35 ERA was 2nd among pitchers with more than 50 IP. For some reason, his stats from this season haven't been uploaded to Baseball Reference. 11 starts, 7-3, 1.35 ERA, 73.1 IP, 41 H (1 HR allowed), 13 R (11 ER), 17 BB, 122 K, 0.79 WHIP
