BA predicted Hughes to Houston in their last 2 mocks but it was at 28 not 17.

I too hope we can save some money on him .

He's sure as hell not going to be our starting DH as long as yordan is here so he needs to work on his defense . Dana can tell him he can earn his 2 million discount back as soon as he can play LF since we will call him up .

Strosnider, Robbins, or Horn would be my pick here.

No idea if they save some money taking him, but was told that they wanted him a lot. They also think he is positionally limited but think he can a good glove in LF.

They like the Notre Dame pitcher they took second they think has untapped potential.

We will see what happens - I was hoping they would take Dietz but told they think he is not going to be healthy.

If you think he is gonna be a star, and think there's real risk he won't be available when you pick next, you take him. If you aren't confident who the best guy is when you're picking, then you can start doing the slot value hedge game.

I have no clue whether he will be or not, but if Hughes is a stud hitter for us in a few years I'm not gonna lose any sleep over him possibly being a reach.

Round 2, Pick 57: Wes Mendes, LHP, Florida State

Last two picks are two high-floor pitchers who probably have higher floors than the top pitchers currently in the upper levels (Pecko, Mayer et al.)

    Wes mendes pitcher

I like it . Hope to get some hits . Our farm system really needs a good shot in the pitching arm .

Mock Drafts pretty much whiffed on those guys. I'm surprised.

    I know nothing about Mendes

Well, sounds like a solid pick. And I have idea what Brown is doing. I guess he’s going college players so they can move through the system quickly? I would’ve believed in this round they’d go for high upside prep players.

This summarizes what they did. I don’t know how much they did or didn’t save. I just know the Astros really wanted him and had information he would be gone by pick #28.

So you are saying that Dana Brown got lucky despite his obviously, poorly considered trade decision?

You never really know with pitchers, but neither of the guys we've picked looks particularly sexy.

    "High floor, could be decent"

Information that could only have come from him or his agent...which makes it very dubious information.

Both guys are probabiy among the top 5-6 pitchers in the draft with the highest chance to be #4 SP or better.

Yeah I'm not sure how MLB teams play the draft with so many different teams and no trades .

Is this Dana covering for bad press so early ?

If other teams are telling Dana then of course it could be a ploy.

I think in this case , the Astros are just trying to save early . We finally have top half bonus money which is like crack to Dana Brown and all MLB general managers.

This is all a degenerate gamble ;)

Fingers crossed that one of Archer Horn, Blake Bowen or Will Brick make it to #92.
