...and quite a few other notable players. If he can hit who the f**k cares right...but he has to hit a lot.
We might see Houston get 5-6 Anthony Huezo/Nehomar Ochoa/Jase Mitchell/Chase Jaworsky types in this draft. Those are high ceiling high value picks that usually sit in the 10-20 range of an org’s list before either having a major breakout or busting.
He's not significantly smaller than Bagwell or Yuli. He's tall enough if he's otherwise adept at 1B. If he can hit they will make a spot for him.
I would slot Hughes 7th on Houston’s current prospect list. He could arguably be as high as third or way lower but he’s nowhere near the same tier of prospect as Neyens/Alvarez. That said, Hughes probably has one of the 3 best hit tools in Houston’s system. Red Sox just went way undershot with their pick. So 3 teams so far are setting themselves up to target overslot picks later in the draft as the heart of their strategy.
I just wanted someone named LeBron . But , agree with overall synopsis that this is an underslot play I don't HATE that idea , but you need a significant number of teams to play ball because you can't trade picks and your targets might get taken . I'm a bit worried on the CBA aspect of this , and I don't know for sure , but is being on the verge of a lockout an incentive for teams (say yankees or traditional big spenders) to blow past the money pools since the punishments might be different under a new CBA . I'm a little surprised he fell to us and we passed . I really do trust Dana running out minors . We traded so much talent and lost out on a drafts salary pool over a couple of years . The job he has done reviving our system from the depths of hell has been awesome . I think what many thought we were missing are the elite prospects ... And certainly #17 was a chance to get a top 100 guy . But , Dana if he executes an underslot strategy could get multiple guys now that in a year can be just as good of prospects . Let's see how this plays out. Lots of picks left today
The draft pick penalty for past overages would still apply, so teams aren’t going to go more than 5% over.
There's an interesting bit of math that goes into this strategy. You want enough teams doing the strategy so that your guys aren't automatically taken . But too many teams doing it probably screws negotiations and also makes your safe 5th round target potentially gone (just hypothetical) I mean the Astros in 2012 picked Correa , who was a top 5 prospect , but had the benefit of signing for less than the other top guys wanted. But if Lance gets drafted before 32 or whenever we took him then we better have another equivalent target . I think , reflecting on it for a second , the astros with their high number of early picks are in a good spot to capitalize today and tomorrow
DSL/FCL teams, that's great, if this is your greatest accomplishment as GM then this speaks volumes. Didn't the Stros have a great bullpen before Dana got here. Click proved that building a great bullpen is one of the easiest things to do when constructing a roster. Dana does appear to be a great scout, but he's out of his depth as a GM.
Also I do wonder if rojas was there if we would have taken him . Tex loves high school pitching , we've really been scared to go high school pitching early since lunhow
Not crazy about Hughes, but he can hit and there’s a short porch in LF at Daikin, so it could work out well. Either way, it’s a much needed addition of talent to the minor league system.
I get why prospects are ranked the way they are, lacking tools to create value outside of the batters box eliminates a huge safety net. However hitting is a pretty damn important part of the game, and Hughes profile as a hitter has virtually no flaws. If you are confident he is gonna be a great MLB hitter prospect rankings be damned.
Yeah, the Stros can use as many OF'ers that can hit as possible. I dont care if Hughes is a LF only guy. Tell me more about his hit tool and how far he's away from MLB, seeing that he;s a college player.
Sure , and a lot of it is also external media rankings vs how's teams internally view guys . I do hope this guy is under slot tho There's probably a fair point to be made that you can get more in a trade for a higher ranked prospect than someone you like but no one else does
I don’t have a strong opinion - but I will say Brown has had a lot of success with toolsy high schoolers. He doesn’t seem to be picking like someone worried about losing their job.
Yordan Alvarez…. Lance Berkman…Aaron Judge.. You better HIT - but if you can HIT, no one gives a **** if you aren’t a great left fielder.
So who are we picking at 28? I don't know anything about prospects, but Logan Hughes sure looks like he has elite hitter potential.
