    I believe the Kentucky legislature already took away the governor's power to appoint a replacement.

    What is preventing Beshear from calling their bluff and declaring him unable to fulfill his duties due to being a corpse and call for a general election? A Republican will still likely win, but why not move forward?

    This is what I heard and read.
    The governor gets a short list of Republican replacements and the governor has to pick one from that list provided.

    From Gemini:
    • 2021 reform: The Republican-led legislature limited the governor’s appointment power, requiring the appointee to be chosen from a short list of three names provided by the executive committee of the outgoing senator’s political party factually.co+1. This effectively prevented a cross‑party pick.

    The law changed again in 2024 to require the governor to call for a special election rather than picking from a party provided list.
