Mexico were riding on spirit and the home crowd to keep the game close last night. England had a tremendous talent + size advantage that could not be overcome -- even with 11 on 10 for much of the second half. Raúl Jiménez had a couple that just barely missed -- would have changed the outcome most likely... as extra time would have benefitted El Tri. The entire Mexican strategy for the last 20 minutes was flawed, as kicking those high crosses into the box is NOT advisable against a big physical opponent like England... especially given Mexico's small front line. Subbing out Quiñones was ill-advised -- he was Mexico's best scoring threat. This is England's best team in quite some time -- huge transfer market values for almost the entire squad and they are playing well. They are a legitimate contender to win the tournament.
Mexico looked like the better team most of the game. Just a lack of execution as England even with 11 men decided to play in their box. Mexico just wasn’t able to do much with the physical disadvantage. They had a lot of guys who would be considered small on a woman’s gymnastic team out there. Not sure what to think of it. Mexico looks promising moving forward though. I thought they would win last night.
I didn't. England is simply the better team and, in the end, that showed. The right team won. And I don't say that because mexico, to me, is what the 90's Jazz were to Rockets fans. No team I despise more...really in any sport...than the mexican national team. Glad they're gone.
The one game auto suspension has always been dumb. Leave it up to America to fix it, amazing that people have just blindly accepted it for all these years. It makes no sense, just like it didn't make sense before when they only could do three subs, some things are just dumb. Imagine if he got that red card in the first 10 minutes, then it would make even less sense that he'd get suspended a game, he basically would have been out a game any ways. If they wanted it to be a logical rule (if you MUST have an auto suspension) then just give it a 90 minute ban. This way he could still return for this game after he's served his combined 90 minutes. Even still, it's completely fair that moving forward that red cards can be appealed and reviewed, otherwise you leave it up to refs who can then completely ruin teams runs by ejecting a player for a game or two. If it were some qualifying game or some club game in a regular season, no one would care about the one game suspension. But this is a thing that happens every 4 years. That obviously has always been an issue, they will thank us later for setting a new precedent. But maybe not. They are giving out red cards for covering your mouth after all.
The big difference is the the 2017 Astros team was accused of cheating on the field of play, that's entirely different. Lets not get into whether other teams were doing shady stuff too, but I'm just saying cheating on the field of play is a lot different than something procedural like this. If the USA wins this world cup it'll be because they earned it. It's not like they are forcing teams to play with a man disadvantage. I see so many Euro-soccer fans saying Balogun is just some mid striker on AS Monaco so nothing to fear...so it shouldn't matter if he plays. He's just some mid player in the end, shouldn't matter, I don't get why him playing would taint their victories. It would be like if USA Basketball was mad that Rui Hachimura was playing. Imagine that same situation, FIBA world cup (next year I think) and team USA whining and complaining that Rui Hachimura is playing for Japan. They would never do that. They would laugh and just beat them anyway. Belgium should have the same mentality. The coach should give his opinion on it "Yeah, I don't know what's going on all that but at the end of the day, we feel we are the better team and will win." and let those over handle it for him.
The US and FIFA just opened the floodgate. Every countries still in the tournament are asking to appeal their yellow and red cards now.
"The Americans fixed it"? The f**k we did. It's corruption/collusion, plain and simple. I'm guessing you're happy with this World Cup being played with quarters regardless of where the game is, too. Maybe you agree with that douche from Barstool Sports that things we should make the goals bigger.
The last thing the game of soccer needs is for America to "fix it". Now, if you want to somehow root out the corruption and such, hell yes, although something tells me that the US won't be interested in that for a few more years.
