Im not sure who would hate this proposal. Watching free throw fests is excruciating. The Spurs/Thunder was an absolute chore to watch.
When attempting 2 free throws, I've seen stats where the %age on the first and second FT's were both in the 70's, but the 2nd FT %age was a bit better. I remember reading a Reddit post on the stats when shooting 3 FT's, but I can't remember the exact numbers, but the %age increased from 1st to 2nd to 3rd attempt. The 3rd attempt was up close to 90% from what I recall.
From looking at it, It... will. TS% is basically points per fga's and fta's (simply-put). Now you'll be scoring more pts per fta's. I'm basing this on the assumption that these shots will still be awarded 1 FTA like, I believe, the G-League has been doing it for the past few years with their one-FT rule. Not to mention if/how the actual calculation of TS% itself will need to change. Let's just not change it! lol. It's only fair.
This is really a non-issue, You just treat it as the net effect. If you take a 2-pt FT, you just treat it as though the player went 2-2 or 0-2 on FT's. If it's a 3pt FT, just treat it the same as going 3-3 or 0-3.
Maybe I'm not understanding - so if a guy goes to the line one time for 2 possible points, you say he had 2 FTAs in the boxscore even though there was only 1 FTA? If that's what you're saying, then if a guy gets fouled on a 2pt shot, makes the shot, gets awarded 1 foul shot, and misses it, it would be shown as 0-1 FT and, later, if he gets fouled on a 3 pt shot and hits the free throw, it would be 3-3? If those are the only free throws attempted by him in the entire game, did he shoot 1-2 and 50% (which, literally, is what he shot) or did he shoot 3-4 and 75%? It's tough for me to accept someone shooting 2 shots shot them at 75%. It's almost rendering the FT% numbers almost arbitrary/pointless. Then there's the "sometimes this, other times that" of the rule which is more annoyance than anything : "How many FT's did Bob attempt in that game?" "Two" "I only saw him shoot once" "Let's pretend it was 2" "Ok" "... unless it was in the final 2 minutes of the 4th quarter or OT - then we go back to the old way" I could've sworn when I looked into this a few years ago, the G-League was scoring it as being 1 attempt no matter the point value, but I'm not sure they changed it eventually or just kept it that way. This all still leaves having to re-think what stats like FTA, FTAr, FT%, TS%, possibly some REB stats, etc. are and how they're affected and calculated down the road a bit. Not to mention it just sounds bizarre. Also, we're going to have a pre-202x version of these stats and post-202x version of these stats caveat when people try to compare.
I love the idea. I just wonder why the plan is to disable it for the last two minutes. For gaming the scoreboard a bit more in close games I guess? I still don't like that, though, as the last two minutes of close matches is the slowest, most painful part of the game right now.
I'm not talking about the box score - I'm talking about when calculating your TS% that you were concerned about. It's easy to keep the same tracking as now. Whatever you do, the formula will have to change since the scoring system changes, but it can track exactly what it does now pretty easily with that simple change. The box score is going to be different anyway because a single FT can be worth 1, 2, or 3 pts and it will have to distinguish between those somehow. I don't know what they do in the g-league or how it's tracked statistically.
I imagine it's for drama's sake. Similarly in football, they have a running clock during most of the game but then stop it more often in the last few minutes to create opportunities for comebacks. In basketball, it creates more variance, pressure, drama, etc. Plus sometimes you need to miss a free throw intentionally, but need to make the first one, etc. I think the idea is that this is just an efficiency change to speed up the game, but ideally you to keep the system as true as possible in the more critical moments.
The thing is that the game isn't even that slow except in the last two minutes of close games. And I actually think the single free throw rule adds drama, it doesn't take it away. It adds additional pressure to make free throws at the end of a close game, or you could risk blowing a lot of leads. But what you were saying about making one and intentionally missing one is what I was trying to get at in my previous post. That's the only decent reason I can think of for doing it this way, but it's insufficient.
That's the point I'm making : you can assign 3 FTA to a FT shot for TS%, but in the boxscore show he only had 1 FTA, and that ends up being confusing down the road. If "they" want to somehow keep some other column for it, maybe, but I doubt that's going to happen. That's going to be confusing for anyone, and I doubt anyone is going to keep track of that in a boxscore, but in any case that's exactly where the confusion comes in - 3 FTA for TS% (or any other) purposes, which isn't noted anywhere in a boxscore, but 1 FTA for boxscore purposes (as it currently is being done in the G-League). I decided to look at a random boxscore from an RGV game and if you look at Vipers Legend Teddy Allen's line under his "traditional boxscore", he shot 12/14 FG, 7/9 3P, and 6/6 FT, which, in today's parlance, would mean a total of 37 points scored, but he actually scored 39 points in that game under the proposed new rule. No other column (that I saw) exists that would tell you of any extra points per FTA because of the new rule that occurred there. Now you go to his "advanced boxscore" and it says his TS% for the game was 117.2. The only way to get 117.2 based upon is by assigning 1 FTA to each of his FTs, no matter the points per FTs. This inflated his TS% due to more points per FTA. Interestingly, I did find a column in the Gamebook link of that game that showed a boxscore with an "FTP" column that seems like it could stand for "free throw points" or something. I don't see it in the stats on the web side of it, though. Ah well, if this ever comes to pass, I was more curious to see how they'd handle stuff like this as well as how much it's going to affect future calcs like TS%. If anything, it may create more goofy stats.
I don't know : Foul - "2 shots!" TV and radio takes time to do an ad for whatever or crack a few jokes Everybody takes time to get positioned around the paint for the first free throw Makes the first FT shot Entire team comes and daps the FT shooter up for doing a wonderful job whether he makes or misses the shot Substitutions Maybe another ad while this is going on Everybody points at everybody saying "I got him.... you get him..." Swap positions across the lane with your teammate for the rebound you really aren't going to go after Shoot 2nd FT shot... brick. I think you can say there's some slowdown in there. Come to think of it, maybe they lose some ad time. lol.
FWIW, I don't think anyone is adjusting formulas or boxscores for g-league games, but they will adapt for an NBA game. Whenever they added the 3 pt shot, they had to redo the whole box score system too. I think, relatively speaking, it will all be a fairly easy change.
Well, you said you thought the game was only really slow in the last 2 minutes of the game. I was just saying that there's a lot of slowdown during practically every foul/FT session throughout the game. The last 2 minutes of the 4th quarter (and in OT periods), the new rule wouldn't apply since they'll be using the "old way" of shooting FTs for those parts of the game. I like anything that will speed the game up a bit. It's not baseball slow, but it's got its moments.
