Im not sure who would hate this proposal. Watching free throw fests is excruciating. The Spurs/Thunder was an absolute chore to watch.
When attempting 2 free throws, I've seen stats where the %age on the first and second FT's were both in the 70's, but the 2nd FT %age was a bit better. I remember reading a Reddit post on the stats when shooting 3 FT's, but I can't remember the exact numbers, but the %age increased from 1st to 2nd to 3rd attempt. The 3rd attempt was up close to 90% from what I recall.
From looking at it, It... will. TS% is basically points per fga's and fta's (simply-put). Now you'll be scoring more pts per fta's. I'm basing this on the assumption that these shots will still be awarded 1 FTA like, I believe, the G-League has been doing it for the past few years with their one-FT rule. Not to mention if/how the actual calculation of TS% itself will need to change. Let's just not change it! lol. It's only fair.
This is really a non-issue, You just treat it as the net effect. If you take a 2-pt FT, you just treat it as though the player went 2-2 or 0-2 on FT's. If it's a 3pt FT, just treat it the same as going 3-3 or 0-3.
Maybe I'm not understanding - so if a guy goes to the line one time for 2 possible points, you say he had 2 FTAs in the boxscore even though there was only 1 FTA? If that's what you're saying, then if a guy gets fouled on a 2pt shot, makes the shot, gets awarded 1 foul shot, and misses it, it would be shown as 0-1 FT and, later, if he gets fouled on a 3 pt shot and hits the free throw, it would be 3-3? If those are the only free throws attempted by him in the entire game, did he shoot 1-2 and 50% (which, literally, is what he shot) or did he shoot 3-4 and 75%? It's tough for me to accept someone shooting 2 shots shot them at 75%. It's almost rendering the FT% numbers almost arbitrary/pointless. Then there's the "sometimes this, other times that" of the rule which is more annoyance than anything : "How many FT's did Bob attempt in that game?" "Two" "I only saw him shoot once" "Let's pretend it was 2" "Ok" "... unless it was in the final 2 minutes of the 4th quarter or OT - then we go back to the old way" I could've sworn when I looked into this a few years ago, the G-League was scoring it as being 1 attempt no matter the point value, but I'm not sure they changed it eventually or just kept it that way. This all still leaves having to re-think what stats like FTA, FTAr, FT%, TS%, possibly some REB stats, etc. are and how they're affected and calculated down the road a bit. Not to mention it just sounds bizarre. Also, we're going to have a pre-202x version of these stats and post-202x version of these stats caveat when people try to compare.
I love the idea. I just wonder why the plan is to disable it for the last two minutes. For gaming the scoreboard a bit more in close games I guess? I still don't like that, though, as the last two minutes of close matches is the slowest, most painful part of the game right now.
I'm not talking about the box score - I'm talking about when calculating your TS% that you were concerned about. It's easy to keep the same tracking as now. The formula will have to change since the scoring changes, but it can track exactly what it does now pretty easily.
