Not defending Stone (believe me, I'm puzzled by his choices all the time), but second-round picks aren't what they used to be. The better players are staying in college longer (and making more guaranteed money there). Losing out on seconds isn't great, but it isn't the bigger loss it used to be.

This is an overpay. Rockets better have someone in mind to use that space because they definitely could have built him up and traded him for less later, avoiding the tax still

That’s offset by the increase of foreign players though, and I assume you’re only talking trade value, bc obviously the only way 2RPs get worse is if the overall talent pool is trending down, and NIL money merely means the talent delays their entry date.

One trend that continues is on draft day, you can’t buy with cash-only the top 2nd-round picks anymore. They have increased in value that you must trade for them now. You can only buy into the end of the draft.

Can you trade the trade exception for a higher salary or does it have to be the exact amount or less? I know you can’t aggregate it with other players

It’s about having them available for trades, which are very valuable right now. The Rockets could have waited and traded him for less. Now they have only 2 second rounders for the next 7 years. An absolute horrible mismanagement by Stone.

You can literally buy second rounders with cash.

Ayton was only an 8M contract and is really good as far as backup centers go.

Serious question: Have we ever done anything with a trade exception besides letting them expire?

People here still living in the Morey lie that they're worth a young talented player.

Good God Stone sucks. What a disaster that signing was! Just complete and absolute abysmal failure. But at least they had enough sense to get out of it. The bigger question now is whether or not they will do anything meaningful with the exception, or will Stone screw that up to? His ass has to be on the line at this point.

It was a supposed to be a minor procedure that would have hin ready by training camp. Nobody called it a major surgery from start to end.

Unless we sign someone else I hate this trade. I want to see if DFS was really that bad or he just had a fluke year.

If he starts playing well on the Hornets and we just did this trade for luxury tax savings (LTS) I will be so pissed.
