$25M. The AAV impacts Houston’s ability to navigate the CBT, but it doesn’t have any bearing on whether or not Altuve is overpaid in 2028-2029. He’s overpaid this season (unless he has a serious breakout), and he will likely be overpaid next season. But he won’t be overpaid by much if at all for 2028-2029; hell, Altuve is worth $13M just to hang around the park and sign autographs for kids for 2 seasons.
They paid Beltran $20 million in 2017 dollars... for a team that wasn't spending on anybody. On the one hand, I think the players do need to accept a salary structure that other sports have already adopted, but when I see salary issues like that (where a vet minimum hasn't really changed much over 10+ years, despite the game finances and franchise values continuing to go up), I do think owners/teams get so wrapped up in the cost savings' and WAR factors with young callups, and there is very little of a middle class or stable veteran class that owners are willing to fork over set dollars to.
It’s comical that by the time Imai throws his first pitch someone is already up throwing in the bp. #justincase
When Imai stinks it, it happens quick. If he continues being a starter, Astros need a quicker hook, like he's a poor man's opener. You can't give Imai 4+ baserunners in the 1st inning. If three runners reach, enter fireman or Blubaugh, then Blubaugh for 3+. Imai does damage too quickly to wait for 4+ runs. He shows almost immediately whether he has it that day or no. If he survives early, then he will probably go 6+.
Who cares if he's overpaid? I'm not sure there is actually a dollar amount you can put on his contributions to this organization over the past 12 or so years. It seems the AAV has far more importance and implications for the Astros than his being overpaid.
The problem with this is it kills your bullpen and you can’t always just set it up so Blubaugh is ready “just in case there is a disaster”. What if Blubaugh is needed the day before? This is especially the case when he’s not the only starter we have liable to blow up and/or not pitch deep into games.
You're replying to my comment that was a reply to this: https://bbs.clutchfans.net/threads/official-twins-astros.329833/page-10#post-16214606 I don't care that Altuve's overpaid this season and next. I am sad he's declining, but I still love him.
Yeah, that's why I prefaced... if he's starting. Astros have pitchers returning from injury. They need/have multiple Blubaugh's in the pen. Some guys must be planned for 2+ innings pretty much every appearance. Santos is an easy choice to replace. It happens too fast too often with Imai. We got lucky vs Royals by scoring 9 in the first. Imai's suckage didn't hurt as bad.
Yeah, I hear what you’re saying…it’s pretty apparent when he’s about to implode. After he walked the 9 hitter yesterday immediately after what he did in the first inning you could sense it coming.
Agreed. I'm sure Altuve could've got $35 mil AAV for 12 years if he helped the Astros win even just 1 WS and we all would've said back then, "Worth it!" We got 2 and much cheaper.
