I've always thought of him as a Sabonis. Good player, far from great. Might be a few all stars here and there mostly as a reserve but certainly can't be the main guy and maybe not even the second guy. Pacers and Kings have figured that out.
My first preference is to trade KD for a package built around picks, but there's not a lot out there that makes sense. Kawhi is the next best option all things considered. His scoring fills a need, his defense is up to Ime's standards, and he wouldn't cost you an arm & a leg. Sure, he's old and he's not a chemistry guy, but neither is KD, so you're basically doubling down. The trick is to not give up any meaningful draft assets plus match the length of any extension to KD's deal - that way you can swing for the fences with these older guys without impacting your future. Considering the foregoing, you could deal Sengun & DFS for Kawhi. The team seems down on Sengun anyway.
Some people just hate Sengun lol. They think his value is nothing and would trade him for picks. Someone told me the other day Julius Randall was better than him lol
Translation: “If we can get him for expiring contracts and almost no assets - we will do it.” I’ll believe it when he is in a Rockets uniform. Then he can sit next to FVV, Adams, KD and DFS in suit row next to the bench.
Kawhi in a Spurs uniform would give them some consistency and veteran scoring punch. And he'd enjoy all the love from their fans. If he comes here, it won't be a good fit.
Whew looking desperate. Already made a bad move for an old, injured player. How to ruin your team long term part 2. Stop panic trading, our fans still haven't learned. The shiny object syndrome is making your team worse. (rationalizations incoming, the KD trade was okay etc.)
