I like your post because I read it and you are correct. And that really got me thinking "why do I hate this move that is objectively good?" And I can't speak for everyone here, though I think a lot of people would agree with what I'm about to write, but here are my thoughts.

I am sick of Ime ball. I'm sick of the Ime-ball archetype player who is good on defense and bad on offense. But it's more than just that, it's a guy who's good on defense but also probably a little bit overrated because he's a high effort high motor player that is always giving 110%, flying around and playing recklessly. What was the Westbrook quote about Patrick Beverley? “Pat Bev trick y’all, man, like he playing defense. He don’t guard nobody, man. He just running around, doing nothing.” I know that's overstated because Marcus Smart is obviously a good defender, but I think Ime likes defenders that have some of this quality in them. I think Ime would've loved Pat Bev.

Anyway, then comes the offense. Ime players are not only bad on offense, but they're also irrational confidence guys. Guys that don't know their role. He doesn't like the defensive specialist that is comfortable taking 5 shots per game because he knows his limitations. He loves the guys who love taking stupid boneheaded shots. How many times did we see Dillon Brooks decide he's going to go full Kobe iso mode and shoot a turnaround 20 footer? Is that ever a good shot? Tari has some of this in him too. Marcus Smart is an Alperen Sengun level 3 point shooter who takes like 6 of them per game. And you can tell he would love to take 10 of them per game if he could. But he will NEVER bench these guys, never under any circumstances. Anyway, I am just sick of these types of players. I'm sick of Ime throwing out a lineup of 5 of these guys as we lose a 25 point lead because we have a team full of players who can't dribble, can't shoot, can't pass, and are generally just stupid players. But hey, at least they're playing tenacious defense, look how hard they're all trying.

So yeah, those are my thoughts on it. You are right, it would objectively be a good move in a vaccum. But it signals that Ime is still trying to collect Ime ball players. I wouldn't be surprised to see Marcus Smart playing 30+ minutes per game just because of Ime's tendency to overvalue defense and undervalue offense. I'm just sick of Ime ball and I'm sick of Ime ball players. And by the way, Ime ball players never ever get benched. Did Dillon Brooks ever get yanked for going Kobe mode? Does Bari get benched for passing up a wide open 3 to dribble into 2 defenders and turn the ball over? They get so much extra rope and it is very frustrating to watch.

Anyway sorry for the essay. I know it's a lot. I haven't posted on here in a while because I'm super bummed about the state of the team.

Smart is not taking a vet minimum. That's the only way I would want him.

He’s always been a good player. He still can shoot 3’s unlike Thompson who’s a non shooter. Spurs boast lineups with Castle and Harper alongside one another. Or Fox Castle or Fox Harper. Both not great 3pt shooters but they can still shoot and a threat. As long as he’s not a non shooter like Thompson or Sengun this issue is overblown by fans

GM’s and ownership working with coaches to get the players they want isn’t new. It isn’t unheard of. Coaches play a certain style and system and have specific players and types of players they want. Management collaborate with coaches to build a roster. There’s nothing wrong with this. This is part of coaching and part of basketball.

It’s only a problem when the coach wants to play an outmoded brand of basketball and wants over the hill vets. I have no problem with vets, just not expensive ones on the downside of their careers, especially those that have a very tough time staying healthy.

What do you think coaching is? What do you think management is? That each side works in a bubble? That coaches just take what GM’s give them with zero input? I don’t understand what Rockets fans think about when it comes to organizational dynamics and functions. This isn’t new. The idea of Udoka wielding massive power isn’t based on facts at all. It assumes coaches have no say on decision making and that they shouldn’t have any say in decision making.

that’s a different argument than “udoka has too much power” or “stone is a yes man”. Based on what? Nothing in the Rockets organizational dynamic is unusual.

Every organization acts differently. Some orgs the coach has a bigger say, in some less. I would say that Bill O’Brien had way too much sway on personnel decisions even before he was GM. ‘Given the type of player Stone is recruiting, it is not a stretch to say Ime has too big a sway with this organization. Of course, if you like the way the roster is being constructed then that’s alright. It’s ok for fans to speculate on who is the big dawg. There is no reason to be on a forum, if we can’t speculate and try to make informed opinions, why even participate?

Any one of those would've gotten us to the 2nd round. Wish he had this revelation earlier

Marcus Smart is exactly the kind of player I think we sign and then run it back. Smart, Schroeder, Conley you name it. Who cares?

Like Corey Joseph bro we didn't need much to beat that trash Lakers team. Just someone who could get the ball up the court without getting stripped from behind by grandpa LeBron
