I think we got the best of Fred that first year. I hope he continues his career. I wouldn’t mind if he continues his career here, but it would have to be on very low money and maybe with team options. Given the injury and age I probably wouldn’t sign him to a 2 or 3yr deal but I can definitely see a rebuilding team wanting to take that chance. He’s a huge culture setter and would be super helpful to a team like the Bulls, or frankly any of those teams in the early lotto. There’s probably more long term security out there for Fred at better money with another team. Given the Rockets obsession with him it will be interesting to see what happens. I’ve been reminded by others that preserving his salary slot is important

FVV not opting in fits with Stone's MO of wanting to keep options open.

Love this! Like the thought process. Get more overall rotational depth. And getting younger. We have a solid core in place. I’m in the camp of moving on from KD. But Stone wouldn’t admit to his miscalculation.

Sick of the tired trade proposals for Brown and Greek Freak. Show some imagination. Now if KD is sent out for one those two, cool.

All right, this one is probably getting too creative, the bigger the trade gets the less likely it becomes. But just going to throw it out there anyway.

    HOU in
    Jimmy Butler
    Kel'el Ware
Miami's #13 pick in this draft

    MIL in
    Tyler Herro
Fred VanVleet (opts into player option)
    Golden State's #11 pick
One other future Golden State first round pick
    Boston's #27 pick
#39 second round pick from us

    BOS in
    Giannis Antetokounmpo

    MIA in
    Kevin Durant

    GSW in
    Jaylen Brown

It's a pretty clean swap in that BOS, MIA, and GSW are each buyers bringing in a single star player and getting better, and us and Milwaukee are sellers looking to get younger and taking back expiring money. The mechanics of the trade allow Milwaukee to get back a better draft haul than they could otherwise expect, Miami to gut its depth less than expected, and fewer draft picks to go out for any one team in the process of getting better.

For our front office, I don't really see us being sellers with KD, but I can squint and see a deal like this being something they could sell, since we're getting back a comparable haul to what we gave up for KD (one young rotation player, one late lotto pick, and a veteran) and we're getting back a guy they can technically market to the fans as a "star player".

LOL, that our front office could pull off a 5 team trade, especially one where we unload the guys we need to unload and don’t give up picks.

Trae Young and the Wizards have agreed to a new four-year max contract worth approximately $212MM, Josh Robbins of The Athletic tweets. The fourth year of the deal will be a player option.

    Too much imo.

With Trae Young getting $212M as a FA, would not shock me at all to see FVV get $55M or $60M/2 to walk to Chicago.

Honestly might be my base case now.

I feel like that’s crazy money without knowing what kind of player Fred’s gonna be post-surgery at his age. That Trae Young contract is just a straight up bad contract. I hope that doesnt screw up the guard market.

I think Chicago is the only place he would leave Houston for because he’s from that area. If does that, God bless him.

June 29th is the deadline date for Fred to make a decision, I don't think it's unusual to push the decision to that date.

My expectation- and has been for the last 6 months - is he opts out and the Rockets resign him to a 3/45 type deal. (I don't like it, just expect it).

Anyone who does see the full time PG in Amen wasn't watching last year. He was the main reason the spacing and offense in general was so bad.

He needs to be played as a 3 or 4 where you can somewhat hide the poor shooting and mediocre ball handling (as compared to a point guard).

    And here we go.

    "Rockets open for business?
Rival teams that have contacted the Rockets recently have been informed that 23-year-old Amen Thompson is the only near untouchable on the roster, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Houston isn't actively shopping its All-Stars or other key members, sources said, but are merely expressing more of a willingness to listen than at previous junctures. Concerning Thompson, who will be entering his fourth season and is expected to command a lucrative extension, Houston's brass has already communicated its intentions and plans to continue talks following the draft. The Rockets also wish to retain 3-and-D wing Tari Eason, team sources said — despite outside interest from the Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets and a number of teams that have gauged Houston's willingness in sign-and-trade scenarios. VanVleet is also expected to return, either by simply picking up his $25 million player option or negotiating a longer deal.

The Rockets' deepened understanding of their current standing also lends itself to a potential trade of veteran forward Dorian Finney-Smith, who signed a four-year, $53 million deal last offseason. Finney-Smith averaged career lows in minutes, points, rebounds, field-goal percentage and 3-point percentage while dealing with lingering issues stemming from surgery on his left ankle a year ago. Houston, which has plans to reshape its bench, hopes to dive into the free-agent market and would need to clear room — with Finney-Smith's contract being the most team-friendly — to do so. Finney-Smith has registered reasonable interest around the league, sources said, with the understanding that he should return to full strength by next season."

    A. We already have some intel (yesterday) from Ben DuBose that a new long term contract for FVV in Houston is probably not forthcoming.

    B. In a world where unrestricted free agent Trae Young is getting max offers on the market and ends up signing for $212M/4 with a player option... unrestricted free agent Fred VanVleet is not taking 3/45 lol.

How's that when they are $61m+ over the cap, that $25m doesn't actually create a cent of cap space.

They are also well under the 1A, tax line and 2A.

Retaining the contract or extending it is actually more beneficial to their cap situation than it expiring.

I like it, I might do it - depending on the cap situation going forward, would have to go over the numbers .... but one thing, Jimmy Buckets tore his ACL in January and had surgery in February 9th.
Recovery time is expected to be 9-12 months .... so a November return at the earliest but likely longer.
Might be a tough to sell him as a "star player" in return.

The KD trade was a 7 team deal and I still think they got the better end of that trade.

Shams Charania: Just in: Minnesota is sending Julius Randle and the No. 28 pick in the NBA Draft to the Brooklyn Nets in a three-team trade that sends Nic Claxton to the Chicago Bulls, sources tell ESPN. The Timberwolves will acquire Brooklyn’s No. 33 pick for Randle and No. 28.

    x.com

Shams Charania: Timberwolves free up significant salary with the remaining two years of Randle's deal, giving them more flexibility to retain Ayo Dosunmu and use exceptions. Nets acquire a three-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA forward in Randle into their cap space -- plus a first-rounder. Chicago uses part of its space on a talented athletic center, a position of need, with $30 million in room left.
