Strongly disagree, having been involved in the legal system. A 17 year old convicted of a serious violent crime should not be let out at 18 or 21. Honestly, after 20 years of doing this, males convicted of serious violent crime should never get out. The risk to society is too high. I have a 16 year old client that was beaten and raped by two 16 year olds in a Walmart bathroom. They videotaped it and taunted her and laughed. They wanted to be tried as minors. I’m sorry that Anthony is 17 and a good student. He made the choice to take a knife to a school track meet. He thought about taking the knife out and stabbing someone - and he pulled the knife out and stabbed and murdered someone when he didn’t need to. He cannot be trusted in our society- same with all the other violent criminals and sexual predators.

It sucks that your job has made you so jaded towards rehabilitation of people. Granted prison usually won't help a person rehabilitate. It's hard to go to prison for an extended time and not come out the worse for it.

No, and that's not what I implied. There doesn't have to be a child vs adult clean line. A 17-year-old is not an adult, nor are they a child (12 years old, for example). The legal system is behind the science of child development and remains too inflexible, offering only two tiers: juvenile court with minimal punishment, or adult court with severe penalties. There should be more tiers that better reflect the spectrum of age and development. In addition, every person develops at a different rate, and while the legal system does consider severe developmental delays, it should do more.
