The way Sengun gets judged in the hard jobs vs the way Reed and Jabari get judged entirely on the form of their jump shots is insane. If Reed or Jabari have the ball for more than 2 seconds Marcus Smart just walks over and takes it from them.
He is very clearly more than just a roleplayer, he is a 2x All-Star, and in the right situation with the right coach and right roster he could be a #2 option. It's just that he is not a #1 option and at this point odds are he never will be, and even as a #2 option, he is hard to fit onto a contender unless/until he becomes a passable jump shooter.
Sengun plays Center, he will be judged differently.....as the anchor......of a team. He is just not good enough on defense, and not efficient enough on offense. IF he got a 3pt shot and then shot 75% on his FTs sure, but he regressed last year. And I agree @OremLK he might be a number 2 option, but his limitations on D are real. DD
The Rockets drafted weaker athletes with great looking 3 point shots at pick 3. They are losing because they drafted weaker athletes with great looking 3 point shots at pick 3. The shot of seratonin released into the brain of the observer after Jabari or Reed make a 3 and the feelings that induces has set us back enough. We’re not trading a 23 year old Allstar that is +30 in the playoffs, so we can build around the 22 year olds with below average athletic traits for their position, that are -18 and -34 respectively in the playoffs because the aesthetics of their jump shot fires you up.
And, the whining...he's got to tone it way down. Again though...a product of what he's been around..lack of proper guidance and coaching. Eventually, Alperen will grow up...and clean up.... I really think he's going to turn into an amazing player. Just don't think it'll be here.
Lol. When Ime openly criticized him on the court fans like you whined about it. It isn't coaching it's SENGUN nature. Stop blaming everyone else
You've got the wrong guy. I have no problem with ime calling him out for whining. I most certainly do have a problem with Ime throwing everyone under the bus, all the time...to try to cover up his own incompetence. On Sengun, some of it is the Euro in him...the basketball culture over there. And, it's been exacerbated here.
We were one of the best defenses in the league with Sengun at the five, before we gutted our defense by trading for old/slow Durant and FVV getting hurt. Sengun can be hidden on defense as we have already seen with the right roster construction. If he gets a 3 pt shot and re-gains his touch around the basket, he is an elite offensive player. The Rockets need to dump KD for a pick and get either via trade or draft a guard that can defend and hit 3’s. Shop Sengun. If he gets a haul trade him, if not keep him and keep Reed on the bench until he can improve his defense to co-exist with Sengun.
As I've said on several occasions, Sengun is not bad. He is a good player but not great. And for him to have progressed into an All Star at this stage, I think is a great achievement. However, when I assess players, before they are drafted I tend to look at three things; the first thing Im primarily looking at is what special skill do they possess? The second thing is their size, do they have the potential for growth? And third, their mental makeup. Are they a dawg? I PREFER 2 OF THE 3 QUALITIES For example, Jokic and Giannas. Jokic was long, plus he could shoot and pass but he was terribly out of shape. All of the skills he had then, he has now, its just that he could not get up and down the court. Giannas. He was long, athletic and could handle the ball, he was about 6'7, 6'8 with the potential to get taller, so at worst you knew he could be a special defender, even if his offensive game didn't materialize. To me, Sengun didn't possess any GREAT quality. Athletic?, No. Tall or long for his position? No. Great defender? No. Great shooter? No. And before @DD, @Bobbythegreat and all the ROFs say Reed Sheppard was a great shooter, he had a Special skill.... stop! Reed is a STREAKY SHOOTER, go back and look at his college game log. Steph, Dale Ellis, Reggie Miller I consider great shooters. However, Sengun, to me he is a classic tweener. And that's why he's able to flourish against some but not all. And when he goes up against the more talented centers in the league, in the playoffs, he tend to struggle. Once again....He's good, not great!
Both Sengun and Reed have some physical constraints to how good they can become. Physical traits are really all we have in predicting the future for our young players. Sengun with a 3 point shot and a better touch in the lane is offensively elite. We’ve seen in the past that he can be hidden on defense with the right roster construction, but his physical traits will prevent him from being a good defensive player. Reed is pretty much in the same boat. He can become an elite offensive player, but his physical short-comings (pun intended), will keep him from being a good defensive player. I think Reed’s physical constraints are more difficult for him to overcome on both sides of the ball, given his position, which requires him to be able to get to the hoop and finish, not just hang around the outside and shoot. Both are valuable team members, but both should also be available for trade with the right return.
In reference to my earlier comments, regarding Sengun and Reed. I ran across this video of Fox and Brunson and as you can see, their games, TALENTS, haven't changed too much from what they were in highschool. Your body can improve, your skills can be enhanced but if you dont possess certain traits from the unset, its hard to impossible to pick up those later on.
Reed Sheppard is a borderline NBA midget, and he has no craftiness, isn’t quick, isn’t strong, nor does he have elite ball handling
Physical traits is not the only, may not even be the most important, predictor. Work ethic, mentality, and IQ are some of the most important things for a player's success.
Keep Sengun another season or trade him for a better fit. I’m fairly agnostic. I still think there’s more potential to tap into with Sengun, but I don’t see Houston as the organization to get the most out of him. All I ask is that we get really good value in return and that it’s not in the form of an old player. It needs to be young assets and/or picks. If they trade him the front office cannot screw up the return. That’s all I ask. No Olidipo’s coming back.
I'm not crying. I think it's funny. You'd think the kid was the last to be picked for YMCA pickup games. To be fair, my opinion of Jalen Green was pretty low. When asked to name a good quality about him? "Um, his hair looks cool when he dunks?"
