Some people continue to maintain friendships even with accused/convicted sexual predators. They may convince themselves that the accusations of him exploiting underage girls were untrue or somehow not as bad as was depicted in the press. That mindset doesn’t seem far-fetched to me. Look at the millions who have no personal relationship with Trump, accused many times over of sexual predation, and still think of him as a great guy they’d like to hang out with.

Sure, that happens all the time. It happens in families, churches, sports, and elsewhere. A kid claims sexual assault and folks turn a blind eye, and believe the perp over the child, or just ignore it regardless. Jim Jordan was a good example of that in sports. I used to watch that show " To Catch a Predator" and it sickened me how many men of all occupations got their rocks off to meet up with some child. It's just gross how much effort goes into protecting a perp, like with the Epstein files, or folks just choosing to brush that sick stuff aside. The thing is, a good parent wouldn't prioritize business or anything else over hanging out with or associating with predators. The ones who let kids be around them are disgusting. Whether it's churches, parents, or anything involving children, when in doubt, don't put the kids at risk. All I can say about that is they are disturbing, especially if they have children. Politics should never blind people to a point that they would turn a blind eye to sexual violence and child sexual abuse. That's just sick cult mentality there.

You are missing my point. They could easily have chosen a candidate who wasn't a POS. There are plenty of folks who don't have his nasty morals and background of sickening comments. Why settle for this guy? It's gross. If you want to be better than at least pick a candidate worthy of representing the state.
Who is they? None of the other candidates are beating Susan Collins. I’d rather win with Platner than lose with 78 y/o Janet Mills. Platner was a nobody before the race began and didn’t have the backing of the Democratic leadership nor a bunch of big money donors. If any of the other candidates had any juice whatsoever, they should’ve had no problem edging him out. But they couldn’t. so I disagree that they easily could’ve chosen someone else since it’s clear none of them could speak to the issues Maine voters are facing like he has been able to

It is hard to know what motivates the NYT and the WaPo dwelling on Platners more --defense of the status quo for the top 10% and their bililonaire owners or just clickbait about a new popular candidate. I go with defense of the status quo.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want 78 year old Republican taking that seat either. It's just sad that there weren't more respected "nobody's" (men or women) with just as much passion to fight for those same issues, who also could relate to the people. It's like bigoted men who make nasty despicable comments about rape victims, or who cheat on their spouses is the norm for men wanting to go into politics.
