I'll let y'all guess who I thought this was first time listening.

 

It's either Donny & Marie Osmond or Jane's Addiction, but I like it either way.

 

I hear "The Promise" on the truck radio years ago and I have 2 immediate thoughts:

This is a great song

When the hell did Waylon Jennings cover it?

It was Sturgill Simpson, first time I heard him

 

I always thought this was The Pretenders.

 

That was actually written by Paul McCartney and demoed for Abbey Road, so it makes sense.

 

Yeah, I knew about both; but wasn't sure if the younger crowd knew the lore behind these bands.

This is obviously Michael Jackson or his ghost...

 

When this song first came out, I remember thinking there's NO WAY that's Michael Jackson singing the hook. It's just someone trying to imitate him. I mean, who is Rockwell??



Turns out Rockwell is Berry Gordy's son and he and MJ go way back. Very interesting backstory to this song. MJ did it in one take and didn't want any credit for it. And Rockwell is just a fake name so no one would know it was Gordy's son.
