You're in between the Carr/Schaub situations if he improves. A middling QB with a great defense. What you dont do is extend a middling QB because if you do you're sentencing yourself to mediocrity. This why I'm sure that Hannah and the marketing firm will extend CJ.

I would draft a QB in 2027 and go with Mills for the 2027 season. You cant live in fear if your goal is to win SB's.

 

Adam Schefter -

“They get those 2 players in the same draft (Stroud & Anderson) and the plan is to keep them around in Houston.”

Mina Kimes -

“Houston can do a better job of supporting him, wide receivers were injured in the playoffs there is no helping that but this is an offensive line that they revamped last year & struggled last year. It’s a run game that was 29th in DVOA last season.”

Field Yates -

“I think Max Ihenachor from Arizona State would be a logically pick at number 28 for Houston if he is there.”

 

QB depth chart really doesn't have room for change beyond training camp.

C J Stroud is our starter - He is under contract for two more years and the hope is that he now has the tools around him to solidify himself as Franchise Worthy. If he does not, the changes will occur NEXT YEAR.

Davis Mills is a top backup - He is under contract through the end of the year. He can manage the game well enough to produce wins like he did for three games last year and he did not create or add to a QB controversy while doing so. He will need to be replaced or extended AFTER this season unless a QB needy team wants to trade for him to become their starter.

Graham Mertz - He was considered too highly desired to risk on dropping him to the unprotected Practice squad last year. So he is Mills replacement if Mills is traded. His year was quiet. No noise and no reason to replace him.

A camp arm is usually available in the FA pool.

 

I like Mertz, think he has a high upside.

 

It's always best to get paid after a great year. I expect CJ to have his best year ever in 2026 and 2027 post season.
