Because of the mentioned problems, I had a shut off valve installed in my garage in a convenient place. When the temp goes low enough (or if I know it will overnight), I shut the water off and open it up in the morning after the temp rises. Usually it's just an overnight situation. But if temperatures remain very low for over 24 hours straight, I open it for ~45 mins during the day or evening so we can shower and let the toilets refill.

Hard to believe there are still companies that haven't embraced working remotely. I've been working from home for 8 years.

How can working from home become a political issue?

I’m not even really sure how. But it did, and republicans think it means you aren’t working or something idk.

To me it says you don’t really care if I’m productive. You care about being in control.

People who think other people aren’t productive when working at home clearly have absolutely no self control or discipline in their personal life.

****er, I’m not 12 years old. I’m not logging off the computer and neglecting the work I’m handsomely paid for to go play Zelda in the middle of the day.

I’m angry for you, that’s ridiculous.

It's funny because my mom's house has a shut off valve on the outside of the house where the water main comes in. The house was built in the 1970s. My house built in the early 2000s has a shut off that's buried in the flowerbed.... somewhere... that would take archaeologists 3 years to locate because of mulch, dirt, and everything else covering it after every storm.

Two of several things I've never understood about houses:
1 Shut off valves that are underground, outside near the main water line, instead of in the garage. Already discussed earlier and rectified.
2 Water heaters that are in the attic instead of the garage (or at least on the ground floor in a closet). All water heaters eventually fail and many of them break down and dump 40-50 gallons of water wherever they are. Fortunately, the builder of my house got this one right.

It's just a guess... but I believe the thought was this "we were required to start wfh due to covid/Biden so we'll take it away now". Way to own the libs, guys. I can assure you a majority of my coworkers are red votes and are less than thrilled about it all. And I don't care, everyone gets their vote but it just like jimminy jumpin christmas, if you really don't like THIS (motions to everything) vote for a NEW republican. You don't have to vote blue, but stop letting these shamelessly obvious cronies convince you it was ME lol or people who haven't run an administration here since the 1900s, or people who don't live here, or whatever other boogeyman. For real. It's not left v. right, it's top v. bottom and way too many people either don't realize that or think they're in the "top" category.

    1) Like I said, my shut-off is buried somewhere in the front flower bed. It's probably because buried lines are protected more from extreme temps. I honestly don't mind this as long as there's a way to keep them marked and/or keep them free of debris/dirt. Good luck.

    2) I also am one of the lucky ones to have a hot water heater in the attic. I've been told the reason is because homes have become more "open" floor plan and builders wanted to save space to do other stuff with. They also didn't want to throw it in the garage and take up more space in smallish garages that people could barely fit their 27 cars and junk they'll never use again. So... up in the attic they went.

I think there's a bit of a backlash against WFH because, quite frankly it gets abused. A company I used to work for back around 2009'ish had a WFH policy where if you needed to work from home, you could - just let ppl know you were home. I worked at another company after that and right before COVID hit that let us WFH if needed. There were people at both companies that were honest about it, but by the same token, there were lots of people who abused it. One dude was WFH so often, we used to check in on him. I'd text him some random part of the day and say "Hey John, give me a call". He wasn't even at his house probably because he'd take a couple of hours to respond. LOL. This happened so many times, it became a running joke - "Anybody check up on John today?"

There were people I worked with who could work 5-7 days a week and you knew they were working and honest, but sadly there were a lot of people you knew were screwing the system and the WFH policy for the rest of the people. It became a few people screwing it up for the rest of the company. I think when we got bought out, the new company nixed the WFH policy.

The other issue is that at both companies, after WFH was implemented, time to complete projects got longer, people's excuses became more frequent, etc. Then meetings became a bit of a chore as you didn't know who was working in the office and who was at home, who would be able to call in, etc.

I remember when I used to work at another company back in the late 90's, they let you work 40 hours in 4 days (or something like that) and take an extra day off. The kicker was that you could take any day off. Which basically ruined any in-person meetings because you didn't know what day anybody would take off or people would take Fridays, Mondays, or Wednesdays off and trying to figure out when everybody would be together would be a nightmare.

And that was back when WFH was maybe a once a week or once a month thing or as you needed to do it for personal appointments and stuff. Now WFH is more like, "don't go into the office". From a personal standpoint, I always learned more, had better teamwork, and got more done being in the office, but that's just me.

depends on what you do. I absolutely get way more done not having to get ready in the morning fight a commute and all that jazz.

I definitely work more total hours working from home, but not having to spend the extra hour to bookend each day is absolutely worth the trade-off

John is probably the kind of guy who doesn't get his work done whether he's in the office or not.

I think it comes down to whether or not upper management trusts their people or not. My company had a successful IPO a few years ago...while the entire company was working from home. Even the CEO was doing his "town hall" events from his study.

We now have the option to go into the office whenever we want. But you have to reserve a desk and you can't keep any personal belongings on it at all. You work at a different desk every day. Each desk just had a monitor and a keyboard. Not even a phone.

I get more done at home. When you work in an office, you're done for the day as soon as you walk out the door. Working from home, you can work until midnight if you choose to. Who cares..you're at home. I have work email on my phone so I'm never out of the loop.

I know exactly where that is. I've seen people try to pull that off for years when it's been icy.

Because people are a**holes. That's really all it comes down to.
