For all the people complaining about White's defense, what's the point of having Ime Udoka as your coach if you are afraid of adding offense-first players? It's one thing to focus on defensive minded players when your star is James Harden and your coach is MDA, but when your coach's calling card is being a defensive guru, and you still have to play only great defenders, then your coach is worthless.
Very good point, and that's some of my thinking too in supporting this kind of move. I don't see White as an absolutely atrocious defender either, he's just kinda bad/below-average. He has the height and lateral quickness to be reasonably effective if Udoka can get him to buy in like Jalen did. Edit: Fact of the matter is we're unlikely to find a guy we can afford to trade for who can do all three of these things: 1. Plays above-average defense 2. Shoots threes at high volume on above-average percentages 3. Can handle the ball and do at least some playmaking for the team Those guys are getting paid nearly max dollars these days. See: Mikal Bridges' recent contract. Coby White at least does two out of three, and the two we have the least of on this roster.
Let’s say all that is true. Does the fact that he is a fa next year give you any pause in giving up a potentially really good pick for? That is what it is going to cost
I guess it would depend on the overall package. I'll say 1 FRP and no Tari would be my max offer for him if it were up to me. No clue what Stone is thinking though.
I think if it’s the rockets 2030 pick I’d be ok with it along with Adams or Dfs whichever they want. None of the phoenix, nets, or Dallas picks would be worth it for a rental
If we go by the premise that he is a good fit for this team and is talented enough a player to warrant a bidding war that require a good 1st round pick, then the Rockets should simply keep him after the season. The apron wouldn't be an issue next year so it's just a matter of Tilman spending money. And the only teams with capspace to sign him away are lottery teams and/or already have a lead guard to build aroun, so there's no reason he would not stay with the Rockets with a competitive deal.
Coby White would put us from top 6 to top 3 in the NBA without a glaring weakness when teams pressure us.
The Rockets can re-sign White without worrying about the Apron. That's just in the rulebook. The Rockets also have about $200mil invested in KD, Adams, and Capela for the next 3 years, all players who are old and likely on their last legs. So unless Stone and Fertitta are idiots, their 3 year plan involves trying to win now rather than later. And that's something White can help with, assuming Udoka is as much of a defensive guru as he's suppose to be.
If you could offer parts and one FRP it would be worth it for a serious run this year. Adding White while keeping Tari and eventually getting back FVV, would make this the deepest team in memory.
Next week Stone will say “we were really close to a deal but couldn’t get it done”. Rinse and repeat!!!
Is it really anserious run this year? Ime is still the coach. I'm sure he will fall in love with Coby.
Sports Illustrated reporting that Bulls have asked the Rockets for Reed and Eason. Talks are ongoing. Not so sure about giving up Reed, but Udoka apparently is disappointed with his defense and wants an upgrade.
Looks like Reed, DFS, and a pick (heavily protected first) for Coby and Jalen Smith would work in the trade machine. Would you pull the trigger? I would strongly consider it. Stone's mentor Morey would have.
Uhh instantly. Getting off DFS contract probably costs a first, getting a look at White and retaining Jalen Smith for another season on a reasonable contract for Reed? That's quite the deal. It would kinda worry me if they accepted lol Is Reed still an analytics darling?
