How much value do they have in the 2027 Suns pick? It is seeming like it will be somewhere between 15 to 20 range.
White is on the same tier as of shooting guards as Anfernee Simons or Collin Sexton. They don't impact the game as much as their stats suggest. Scoring 20ppg efficiently doesn't offset being a terrible defender. All three are about the same age and on expiring contracts so I'd be surprised if the market is hot for any of them. They're not terrible players, but this is like getting excited about Kevin Martin. How much would you pay for a bench scorer playing 25mpg? That's White's role on this team. He's not a starter, certainly not next to KD and Sengun. He's not a lead guard, much worse at it than even Amen. I'd much rather go after someone like Luke Kennard especially factoring in the cost and role. He's a much better shooter, wouldn't take the ball out of the hands of our stars, and is actually a better defender believe it or not.
I wouldn’t pay a premium for White, Simon, or Sexton. Simon and Sexton come with high salaries as well. Kennard’s not a bad name. I think we will have a better chance to win this year with another 20-25 min guard that can shoot 3’s. I’d say we wouldn’t even need that if Tari staying healthy was a sure thing. Reed also needs to play more consistently by the time the playoffs roll around if we don’t do anything.
I might pay something. They get nothing from their bench. Then again, we play our guys 42 minutes a game so maybe it don’t matter. Then again, we play our guys 42 minutes because we get nothing from our bench. I'd guess 10th. I think they will have to pay Gillespie for any chance to keep him, which should basically prevent them from adding any talent. I think their team is living on smoke and mirrors this season (i.e., if they return the same team, expect worse performance). There is still a decent chance the Suns pull a Pelicans next year and just can't win, even though they are trying hard.
Doesn't seem all that great, but it's an awesome thing to have if you want to try to move up in the draft.
Simons and Sexton have higher salaries this year, but all are expiring and I think White will get the biggest contract of them all this summer. I wouldn't want to trade for any of these guys this year if it's only a rental, we would need to re-sign them. I would much prefer to go after them in free agency this summer, but they will certainly command more than the taxpayer MLE. White probably wants Jordan Poole type money as he's a very similar player. I would not give it to him. I would not give any of them salaries approaching $20M/yr even though they'll likely deserve it. For this year, our defense is worse than our offense. Someone like Dillon Brooks would help us a lot more than an offense only guard and would have a much clearer role. DFS was supposed to be a suitable replacement but he has not been that guy, whether due to injury or not. I know people think we need a scorer but that is really a low priority with this squad. Basically, I miss Dillon and badly underestimated him.
The Rockets can improve their defense by lowering their turnovers and winning the possession battle. Having another ball handler and passer helps in that regard. That’s why adding a competent point guard makes sense.
Are you talking about Coby White? He is not a point guard and averages 3.1 turnovers per game. He has a higher turnover rate than everyone on our team.
Cob doesn't seem to be a long-term fit in Chicago, but I'd rather not have him anywhere in Houston. Other awesome posters have already gone over his contract and what he will likely demand as a FA, and unequally would be baffled by the move. Then again, Clint's signing was also baffling but has worked out. I'd take Simons over him any day. AS is a great talent and can play both guard spots. He's just had an off year in Boston but he's a proven talent that has plenty of teams listening. There are better, available options for us out there especially in friendly fire with NO, Orlando** Sac** and BK*. It would be very unlikely and somewhat impossible, but I wish Bobby P could come do the dirty work here. He's solid with Ime and has the dog in him offensively and on the boards. The Rockets have been interested in GT and Cole for a minute... Interesting chatter has been around Drummond and a combination of their vets. The youth movement is working there and it's only a matter of time before Embid steps on a blanket and tears something. Quiet but present. If all else fails and the guard(s) we need and deserve aren't an option, give me the veteran presence of Conley/GT with a dash of Luke/or Pat-C for shooting and any reliable bounder (please, Orlando?) Can Marcus Camby come give us 10 mins a game ? Much love to you and yours
We get nothing from our bench because our coach is ass when it comes to things like rotations and actual X&O coaching.
I know who White is. He’s a combo guard who can be a secondary passer and ball handler that has dealt with a few different lower body injuries this season. White is also having by far his worst turnover season in the NBA. He averaged 2.4 per game last year and 2.1 per game in 2023-2024. Is he Fred VanVleet? Absolutely not, as he’s a combo guard instead of a true point guard. That said, adding a combo guard that can handle the ball and pass in a secondary role will help the Rockets better execute in the half court. They do not need to run the offense but alleviate some ball handling responsibilities from Sengun, Thompson and Durant.
Nah. These people regurgitating old news from his rookie season (or maybe they're just being defensive about Reed?). Here's Coby's defensive minded coach last year: https://www.si.com/nba/bulls/onsi/news/billy-donovan-praises-coby-whites-development-on-the-defensive-end#:~:text=I think he worked hard, part is important to him.” I think Reed is probably ranked around 400th defensively in the NBA (roughly bottom 10%). Coby is more like below average, around 250th or so. He was about as a bad as Reed 2-3 years ago.
Coby White hasn't played enough to be considered a qualifying player but if he was his defensive rating would be tied for 156th with several other players, Reed Sheppard's is 35th. That said it's nowhere near a perfect metric... but there's no metric that says anything other than Coby White being one of the worst defensive players in the league. Now that they are trying to move him, it makes sense that they'd come out with puff pieces pretending he got better.... but all of his metrics are dragged down by how bad he is defensively. I'm sure the "eye test" types can ignore reality though.
I disagree completely. If an offense run by three secondary ballhandlers looks ugly, adding a fourth secondary ballhandler who is less talented than the others isn't going to improve anything. Even a team with a true lead guard like Atlanta thought they could relive Trae Young's ballhandling duties by bring in combo guard Dejounte Murray. It just made things uglier. White is much more on the shooting guard side of combo guard. And I don't think he can start next to KD, Sengun, or Amen at all. If you like Coby's scoring and shooting, I think he's perfect for that role. I don't think he would improve our defense and limit our turnovers at all. That is terribly optimistic.
The 2027 Suns pick has a lot of value. I don’t know why people are so quick to give up on it. I think they are over achieving this year. I would trade it, but it’s quite valuable In my opinion.
