Yep. As noted before, three women are getting PhDs for every two guys and that trend is increasing. It won't be but a few years before it is 2:1.

As a young man, I could never figure out why some people wanted to just remove over half of our brain power from society. It seemed stupid to me as a kid and even more so now that I have daughters with graduate degrees and one working on a PhD. Given the rising complexity of our world and the human and natural systems interacting in new ways we don't understand, pushing women aside is national malpractice and will have terrible long-term consequences for our society.

Sure, there are many legit criticisms of how we have traditionally done education in this country and improvements are always available, but indiscriminately wrecking huge parts of the system in a cultural crusade is a pyrrhic victory. Money and power follow brains and we are intentionally pushing the brains elsewhere.

The decision to dismantle NCAR isn’t just about climate politics. It represents a systematic weakening of U.S. scientific infrastructure that took decades to build. When research institutions are targeted or hollowed out, talent leaves, capacity erodes, and the consequences show up years later in poorer forecasting, weaker preparedness, and higher human and economic costs.

This op-ed presents one perspective on that broader pattern of weakening U.S. climate research infrastructure. The authors argue that dismantling the NCAR in Boulder, Colorado, after more than 50 years at the forefront of global climate science, reflects an ideological assault on scientific institutions. They draw a historical parallel to Lysenkoism in the Soviet Union, where political loyalty displaced scientific rigor, producing severe long-term consequences.

While the comparison is provocative, the underlying concern is substantive: when governments sideline or purge scientific expertise for political ends, the damage is rarely immediate but accumulates over time. The erosion of independent climate research increases future risks from extreme weather, sea-level rise, and inadequate planning, with real human and economic costs.

Trump’s shuttering of the National Center for Atmospheric Research is Stalinist | Michael Mann and Bob Ward | The Guardian

The Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin would no doubt have understood and even appreciated the latest attack by the Trump administration on climate researchers and their work.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, is to be dismantled after more than 50 years at the forefront of global research on climate science and monitoring.

This is the latest step in the administration’s climate Lysenkoism and its relentless purge of climate researchers who refuse to be co-opted into its quest for American energy dominance though fossil fuels.

Stalin’s embrace of the work of Trofim Denisovitch Lysenko, who wrongly believed that wheat could inherit characteristics acquired by previous generations, underpinned policies that failed to prevent crop failures and millions of deaths from famine during the 1930s.

Scientists who opposed Lysenkoism were denounced, fired, imprisoned and even executed. While Trump has not gone as far as Stalin, his administration’s persecution of climate researchers could ultimately lead to many millions of deaths from increases in extreme weather and sea level rise in the United States and across the world.

NASA's premier library, housed at the Goddard Space Flight Center, is no more. Holdings will be trashed or pushed into storage.

Intentional recklessness. And it's not just scientists and professors that are being hit by this administration. The support folks they depend on, the specialized librarians and archivists and historians, are all being wiped out.

Goddard Space Flight Center stuff starting to appear on gsaauctions.gov. You can now pick up a flight simulator for $100k. It sounds like the library materials will be appearing shortly. Would be interesting to track how much stuff and knowledge is bought up by foreign countries.

looks like talent ain’t the only thing that’s being driven away

Tens of thousands of fans cancelled their tickets to the 2026 World Cup over the weekend amid safety fears, political protests, and human rights concerns in the U.S., leading FIFA to schedule an emergency meeting this week.

Per a report by Roya News, around 16,800 ticketholders cancelled their World Cup tickets overnight. The cancellations stem from boycotts shared across social media; fans overseas said they are backing out over safety concerns and discomfort with the U.S.’ political climate.

Amid the reported cancellations, FIFA has reportedly scheduled an emergency meeting this week to discuss the situation including fan’s safety worries, declining ticket commitments, and reputational issues as the games grow closer. FIFA has not issued an official agenda, though it will bring together senior officials, member association representatives, and tournament organizers.

Federal science under Trump. This chart does not include everything. For instance, USDA is missing.

When AI kills our career positions or when robots take our jobs and we're all unemployed. Eh, by then though the GOP would have already given up their gun stance in favor of the mega corps and billionaire entrepreneurs out in the open...and their dumbass base would still vote for them... @Astrodome @cml750 @raining threes @dumb****ingrepublicansingeneral.

And likely an even greater number of people with a Masters in their specialty field--biologists, botanists, foresters, chemists, engineers, and many, many more. It really is staggering.

It will take years for the effects to be felt from this amateur hour of politics; how many allies and trade partners are doing deals with new partners because we can't be trusted........................all this so we can make the rich richer, maggats won't know what hit them over time because they are not smart enough to understand the implications in the years to come...................what's really sad is the anti vax crowd, playing Russian roulette with their kids life, but I will say this, they have every right not to get vaxxed, but if you're doing it because of what RFK says than I have to assume your are not very bright

    https://www.texastribune.org/2026/01/26/texas-greg-abbott-h1b-visa-schools-universities/

Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday directed all public universities and state agencies to freeze new H-1B visa applications, escalating his administration’s scrutiny of foreign workers employed at taxpayer-funded institutions.

Under the directive, public universities and state agencies may not initiate or file new H-1B visa petitions without written permission from the Texas Workforce Commission through the end of the next legislative session on May 31, 2027.

Abbott also ordered agencies and higher education institutions to submit detailed reports to the commission, including the number of new or renewed H-1B visa petitions filed in 2025, the number of H-1B visa holders currently sponsored, job titles, countries of origin and visa expiration dates. He also directed agencies and universities to provide documentation showing they made an effort to give qualified Texans a reasonable opportunity to apply for positions filled by H-1B visa holders.
