56 deaths under Obama's ICE operations. 26 of those were shooting deaths. Most others were attributed to poor conditions and medical care in detention centers. Literally, nothing has changed since Obama's 2 terms. There are hundreds of articles referencing the exact same things that ICE is doing now. The only difference is the rhetoric by leaders like Frey & Walz, not allowing local police to work in coordination and support of federal agents and chaotic protests with people interfering with federal operations.

According to ICE records, 159 people have died in ICE custody to date since October 2003. In many of these cases, the abysmal medical care provided at any one of the 637 immigration detention facilities run or overseen by ICE was a major contributing factor in the person’s death.

Earlier this year, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Detention Watch Network, and National Immigrant Justice Center highlighted eight prominent deaths in the report Fatal Neglect: How ICE Ignores Death in Detention, which condemns the inspection system and highlights how violations of medical standards have contributed to the deaths.

Examining documents obtained through a Freedom of Information (FOIA) request, Fatal Neglect counted 56 deaths in ICE custody under President Obama’s administration, six of which were suicides and at least one death followed a suicide attempt.

When someone dies in ICE custody, the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) within ICE is responsible for investigating the death, and often the Office of Detention Oversight (ODO) will conduct a review. Nearly half of the death reviews made public by ICE in response to the FOIA suggest that failure to comply with ICE medical standards contributed to the detainee deaths. In three-quarters of deaths attributed to substandard medical care, the victims were held in for-profit prisons.

“In 2009, the Obama administration promised major immigration detention reforms, including more centralized oversight and improved health care,” said Clara Long, US researcher at Human Rights Watch. “But these death reviews show that system-wide problems remain, including a failure to prevent or fix substandard medical care that literally kills people.”

The US maintains the capacity to hold 34,000 noncitizens in civil detention at any one time, in an expansive network of more than 200 facilities including county jails, private detention centers, and a handful of federal lockups. Most of the hundreds of thousands of people held in this system each year are subject to harsh mandatory detention laws, which do not allow for an individualized review of the decision to detain them during their immigration proceedings.

The Obama administration should take immediate action to improve oversight mechanisms and stop using detention facilities that are unable or unwilling to provide adequate healthcare, Human Rights Watch said. The Obama administration should also end the use of solitary confinement for detainees with mental disabilities.

Last month the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that since the end of January they have been conducting “Operation Border Guardian,” which has been focusing on the removal of individuals who came to the United States as unaccompanied children after January, 1, 2014, but are now 18 or older. As of March 9, DHS had apprehended 336 individuals through these continued raids.

More specifically, the operation will have the effect of returning refugees to face persecution and is already creating a climate of fear across immigrant communities.”

For the past few years, refugees have fled escalating violence and persecution in Central America and sought protection in the United States. Instead of protecting them, however, the U.S. Government is prioritizing their deportation, sending them back to some of the most dangerous countries in the Western Hemisphere. The Obama Administration has consistently failed to treat these individuals from Central America as asylum seekers.

How many court orders did obama ignore ?

And even if I conceded that everything is exactly the same , compare the budgets and size of ICE under obama and now trump. It was a problem back then , its a bigger problem now because we have more agents and more funding .

How many people do you think have died in custody since 2025 ?

Its a problem that ICE shot and killed Pretti , no amount but Obama is going to absolve ICE of their mistake . There are tangible differences , and yes one of those differences has been that resistance is higher. The actions ice are taking nowadays are more aggressive.

Its an even bigger problem that our government blatantly lied to us . A number of statements DHS and various federal spokespeople made are factually incorrect. Suggesting Pretti brandished a weapon , assaulted an officer, Initiated the altercation with ICE are all false and we have video evidence of that.

Of course you shouldn't believe anything this administration tells you . They told you he violently approached officers and brandished a weapon. Video evidence from multiple angles proves that is false.

Worked in for-profit prisons for a few years back in the day. They're a ****ing blight on America. Corporations have no business running prisons (or schools).
