I agree, and I think he hurts the Astros’ defense less at second base compared to left field. I was only saying Brendan Donovan’s best defensive position is second base and that he would start there quite frequently if acquired by the Astros. Donovan would also see some starts in left field and could spell Correa at third from time to time.
My speculation is the Astros spent a great deal of the late fall trying to complete a deal for Donovan, and it did not work out.
I don’t know how much this is playing into teams thinking but in a potential trade of Paredes for either Abreu or Duran or Bello, a potential lockout and lost 2027 season would favor the team acquiring more control. If there’s a lockout next year then Paredes really only came with one year of control. That was another reason why I would have been in favor of Houston gauging Peña’s value and trading him if they got a good offer.
Altuve's longevity and success are two different things. Nobody can effect his longevity but God. Success is only possible for him as a hitter, defensively he is as you said "a liability".
Indeed. I meant one of the ones that got traded. I made that part of the comment about as clear as mud.
Part of the appeal of Bello is that the Astros would like to attach Abreu or Duran (less likely) to Bello in exchange for Paredes and another player. In that scenario the Astros address an outfield spot and a pitcher that can be a 2-4 starter for them that gives them innings. The Red Sox would be giving up a lot in a hypothetical deal of Bello and Abreu. Bello is under contract for 4 years and Abreu is also under team control for four years. Also Abreu is an exceptional fielder that would possibly play some center. Paredes is really good but he is under less control. Red Sox have asked about Abreu and others on Astros, in addition to Paredes. From the perspective of the Astros it isn’t just locking in two guys through 2029 but it also saves them a lot of money that can go at other positions. The Red Sox want to win now, and they have some excess pieces.
I don’t see how it would save them money, Bello has about $70M/5yrs on his deal, that AAV would roughly match what Paredes and Bryan Abreu will combine for.

3-way hypothetical as the smoke from Boston dissipates. Astros get: IF/OF Brendan Donovan Marlins get: 1B Christian Walker $28M ($14M 2026, $14M 2027) Cardinals get: IF Brice Matthews OF Dillon Head P Miguel Ullola P James Hicks Astros roster: LF Donovan 1B Paredes DH Alvarez 3B Correa SS Pena 2B Altuve RF Sanchez C Diaz CF Meyers Bench: Allen, Salazar, Cole, Dezenzo SP: Brown, Imai, Javier, Burrows, Arrighetti, Weiss RP: Hader, Abreu, King, Okert, Pearson, Munoz, De Los Santos IL: Walter, Wesneski, Blanco, McCullers Optioned: Blubaugh, Gordon, Alexander, France, Murray, Sousa, Smith, Whitcomb, TBD waiver claim x2
Not a fan. If Paredes is learning a new full-time position, put him in LF. Prefer Walker+Paredes+Brice+Ullola+$ way over Donovan+Paredes. Walker is not worthy of a buy-out.
Here’s my hypothetical for if the levee breaks at the last minute: Astros get: OF Wilyer Abreu P Marcus Phillips P Connelly Early SP Kodai Senga $8M ($4M 2026, $4M 2027) Red Sox get: 3B Isaac Paredes RP Bryan Abreu Mets get: CF Jake Meyers P James Hicks Resulting roster: SS Pena 2B Altuve DH Alvarez 3B Correa RF Abreu 1B Walker LF Sanchez C Diaz CF Cole Bench: Matthews, Salazar, Allen, Dezenzo SP: Brown, Imai, Senga, Javier, Burrows, Weiss RP: Hader, King, Okert, Pearson, McCullers, Munoz, De Los Santos IL: Wesneski, Blanco, Walter Optioned: Early, Arrighetti, Blubaugh, Ullola, Gordon, France, Alexander, Murray, Sousa, Whitcomb, Smith Houston would be ~$5M under the CBT so they could afford to go sign a backup C or RP to backfill Abreu. But this would be a really, really good roster in my opinion.
Nah man, you can find some treasures there. Sand Dollar and Value Village in the Heights back in the 90's was prime thrift store fun. Get your, uh, mind right, everybody gets $20 to find the coolest haul. Great way to kill an hour on a hotass Houston afternoon.
I gotta go with a hell no on this one . I feel like donovan is your guy (or maybe @Snake Diggit ) And I haven't been the biggest baseball head in a while But he's about a 3 war guy ... Which is good , but one year of control left after this one( bad ) And the Cardinals are getting 4 prospects for him !? I get he's affordable, but we'd be paying miami a lot of walkers salary Idk man I suffered through Abreu (the old 1b) Walker isn't nearly that bad . Imo he was really pressing at the start of the year and second half walker is much more likely to be what we get from him (also more in line with his career ) I wouldn't sell so low on him right now , plus give up 3 of our own prospects to upgrade to donovan. It's possible walker has a better season at the plate than donovan next year . Also I like Brice and Miguel
Preferred the flea market off of 59 and Hillcroft. Used to be a train caboose with a guy that sold cassettes of some great rare albums for like 3 to 4 bucks.
