Truly an incredible upgrade over Trudeau. Carney was basically lab made for moments like this. He was the head of the central bank in Canada during the 2008 recession and he was head of the central bank of the UK during Brexit.

It sucks that the Canadian military is literally doing war simulations on how to deal with a US invasion but Carney is definitely made for this moment.

Nothing groundbreaking, but best unemotional summary I've seen.

If Trump invades, in what way will he rename Greenland after himself? New Trumpland? Donlandia? He's going to do his branding BS on it because that's what he thinks makes him a genius.

Trunp needs to understand that the only way he gets Greenland is by force. There is no version where Greenland "sells out" to Trump, or voluntarily joins America.

Greenland won't do it willingly, Denmark won't do it willingly, Europe won't do it willingly. If he's going to start shooting, I suggest that he should get on with it so we in the USA can start the process of sending him to "retirement".

The best option for Europe is to treat Trump like Putin, and overreact to Trump as forcefuly as possible, economically and militarily. That's how you have to counter a narcissist. Glad-handing, being polite and using diplomatic language don't work. Treat him like he's scum, and isolste the USA like they are suffering from a zombie outbreak. That's what gets a narcissist's attention. They need to be disrespectful and condesending.

I'm afraid that faith in the strength of the American resolve is misplaced old friend.

I made posts a few years ago about some private polling that had been done by some newspaper where they were sounding the alarms about the American people. The average American doesn't actually care about whether or not we are a democracy anymore, don't understand nor care to understand things like "the Constitution" or "separation of powers" and are primed and ready for authoritarianism.

There is a small subset that would band together of "Never Trumpers" and "Never Gavins" (hypothetical) but the big chunk of both parties are ready to embrace authoritarianism as long as their team is the one holding the authority.

As a fellow Dane, I've always like Anders, particularly some of this commentary about the war in Ukraine. I think he's somewhat incorrect here, or at least incomplete, about the US strategic interest, which is not limited to Greenland's geographic importance. He also does not mention China's very real encroachment in the Arctic, Arctic trade routes, and the fact that neither Greenland, Denmark, nor NATO (outside of the US) has the capability to defend them.

lastly, he probably should have mentioned that Denmark and the US have done territorial business in the past. The idea of buying Greenland is not new, and the US has made many such territorial purchases, including from Denmark.

none of which is to say I approve of Trump's tactics.

But it is very much in our national interest to have direct control over GL.

    But....
    But....
    But....

No single person, or President, has done more for NATO than President Donald J. Trump. If I didn’t come along, there would be no NATO right now!!! It would have been in the ash heap of History. Sad, but TRUE!!! President DJT

Every president faces criticism and caricature. Donald Trump, however, is unique in that he is routinely characterized in ways
    more suitable for a toddler. What’s more, it is not just Democrats, pundits, or protestors who compare the president to a child;
Trump’s staffers, subordinates, and allies on Capitol Hill also describe Trump like a small, badly behaved preschooler.

I remember that post, a good and persuasive one.

I am still hopeful that, while understanding our system of government is one thing (and largely out the window now), there's another, deeper quality, where most Americans are not used to being told what to do. Maybe 32% are in -- ahem -- a super-strongly aligned clump following the current president and his cabal. But most of us, whatever our politics or socio-economic status have a deeply "ain't nobody gonna tell me what to do" that I have not found to be as true in other countries.

Counter: 32% is plenty to drive a nation into very dark places. We know this.
