One game he did a bunch of things he literally he hasn't done this year. Maybe they get him at a discount, but he is worth paying. Dude was nails on 3rd down which is required to make noise in the playoffs.
Folks havent forgotten what's it like to b back in the age when we ran the likes of mallet savage, hoyer, osweiler as our qbs. Franchise qbs dont grow on trees. We should b wary to max stroud sure, but it would b stupid to think we are lucky to replace him via draft or trade and replicating this season. Mills is a solid back up qb and we have folks thinking hes better than stroud, that's fking crazy
After Watson, a team shouldn't be scared to draft another QB and use Mills as a placeholder. CJ's rookie year ain't happening again. I'm not a Mills fan, but regardless of talent he wouldn't have made the mistakes CJ made last night.
I'm very glad Caley is the OC. He's done a good job with what he's had to work with. An experienced OC can't fix what's wrong with the Texans offense.
And he probably wouldn’t have converted all those 3rd downs either. CJ performed poorly yesterday, but he has not been fumble prone and both fumbles were caused by good defensive plays. Should he have eaten the sacks, yes. The interception he threw was egregious and out of character. Hopefully, this victory will get him back on his game. We aren’t getting a replacement drafting in the bottom of the 1st round. This defense is built for a long run of relevance and CJ is a young, talented QB that has had an awful OL and 3 different OC’s. Really silly to give up on him this early in his career .
14 Playoff Teams 11 have QBs they drafted - Purdy, Williams, Love, Hurts, Young, Herbert, Nix, Stroud, Lawrence, Maye, Allen. All except for Purdy were drafted to be their starter. 3 have QB's they found elsewhere: Stafford (HoF Trade QB), Darnold (FA), Rodgers (HoF FA QB) This idea that you can just find journeymen QBs to win with doesn't hold up well with the evidence. That doesn't mean you have to pay Stroud (not sure why that's even relevant now - they don't need to make a decision on that for another year or even two years). But the idea of just rolling with Mills or finding some random guy off the scrap heap doesn't seem like a path to success unless you're willing to throw away some of the prime years while you have an elite defense.
Mills wouldn't had to make that throw. Plus you don't know if Mills could have made that throw or not. Let's spend the money it would take to re-sign CJ on the defense and pay Mills 10 mil per year instead of CJ 60 mil per year. Is CJ really that much better than Mills? Posters say it's had to find a franchise QB and I agree with them. But it's not hard to find a mid tier QB which is what CJ is. Plus draft another QB to develop.
You can't play scared, you have to consistently deliver accurate throws while under pressure. All QBs face pressure it's how they deal with the pressure that makes them great, good, journeyman. The last 2 years CJ looked more journeyman than great. Rarely do QBs overcome a case of the happy feet.
Easy to say, but the data seems to show it doesn't work as well as one might think it should Why do they need Mills in this scenario? Stroud is still cheap for another year and a 5th year option after that - there's no requirement that anyone sign him to an extension now. Why not just keep him AND draft another QB if you feel the need for that? That also gives you the flexibility to see if Stroud develops over the next year or two.
Hope you are right. One thing I think we can agree on is CJ's play isn't good enough to win a championship right now. I believe you draft a QB and play Mills while developing the new QB. The ol isn't horrible CJ makes them look worse than they are. 2 years of bad play and a case of the happy feet. How much longer will y'all use the he's young and it's everybody but CJ'S fault excuse?
Not as hard as you think it is. I'm for keeping CJ next year and drafting a QB in the 2027 draft if CJ doesn't show significant improvement. What I'm not doing under any circumstances is extending CJ this off-season.
There’s also zero chance we’ll have a nuanced discussion about Stroud, either. It’s all black & white; no gray. I won’t erase any of his mistakes (other than the flea-flicker) - but I’m also not going to assume five fumbles is a norm nor am I am going to ignore how *really* good he was around those mistakes. The Texans offense looked GOOD. Caley had answers all over the field. The offensive line was dominant. They were, what? 10/15 on third down? Just phenomenal. This team is going to host the AFC championship game. And Stroud is going to have a big day in Foxboro to help make it happen.
I called for him to be fired in the thread about firing him. I don't recall thinking he should be fired in quite some time now. Mostly because I really don't think it's a great idea to fire him and have to start all over again with someone new. I do think it was a massive mistake to hire a guy to call plays for this team who had never called plays for any NFL team before. I certainly wasn't calling for him to be fired right after the Texans won their first road game in franchise history by 24 points lol
Just remember, CJ scored very low on the NFL Combine IQ test. He is loved by the owners, coaches, and other players. I wouldn't give him the max, but they will.
Stroud’s rookie contract runs through 2026 season w/ a 5th year option for 2027 so no decision needs to be made this offseason even if Stroud’s reps push for an early extension
LOL. So it is ALL CJ? LOL. Last night, yes (although he didn't call the flea flicker and Fisher missed the block). CJ still threw for 250 yards and the offense was 10/15 on 3rd down.
