I'm in a stage of life that I'm watching the whole older generation of my family suffering with illness, old age, and slow death. Not all of them would need it or want it, but it would be a blessing for some. I want the option when I get there. It should be available in the US. And, in fact, there are 10 states in which it is legal (though it hasn't been employed as much as it apparently has in Canada) as well as in a dozen other countries.

Nothing wrong with that at all, people choosing for a dignified death is their own business.

exactly, otherwise you end up with sad situations like this one:

Daughter says she strangled 97-year-old mother to death so she could die 'with dignity,' police say

    https://lawandcrime.com/crime/daugh...ath-so-she-could-die-with-dignity-police-say/

    excerpt:

According to the probable cause affidavit, Martha Blake told police that she had been her mother's caregiver for the past five years. A year and a half prior to Patricia Blake's death, both mother and daughter purportedly discussed "death with dignity" with the older woman's primary care physician in Maine. Martha Blake said the doctor told them that Patricia Blake was not eligible because she was not suffering from a terminal illness.

Police said that Martha Blake seemingly decided to take matters into her own hands. She told police that she and her mother discussed "suicide by taking pills," but they did not have anything on hand that was "lethal" enough. Martha Blake explained to police that her mother told her "she did not want to live, and has told her this many times." After Martha Blake was read her rights, she maintained the same story.

Martha Blake was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. She is being held at the Main Detention Center in West Palm Beach, Florida, without bond. Her next court date is scheduled for Jan. 25, 2026.
this story has gotten a fair amount of attention the past couple of days

This becomes an option up here in NY on Jan. 1.

    I don't have a problem with it.
My only question is will insurance pay out if someone takes this path

While there are always going to be concerns about who is using the service --- I have zero doubt that this is an option that should exist.

We have an aging population - we have drugs and machines that can and do artificially keep people alive at all costs -- and some of these people do not want to be kept alive and shouldn't be kept alive. There are a lot of people that are suffering and do not need to.

It is humane and kind to have a way out for those that have chronic pain and conditions that are ultimately terminal.

No one wants to talk about this - but it is also a large part of why our medical costs are so high.

We will do things like some radiation therapies for cancer to people that are terminal - knowing that the therapies will result in severe cognitive issues, and will not be successful. We will use machines to try and get a pulse from people that have not had a heartbeat in 15 minutes or longer. The level of brain damage suffered by someone in that condition is extreme.

My sister and I were talking about this very thing during Xmas and I am 100% for it if I get to a place where I will not have a dignified ending, I am DNR and I don't want to be 85 with dementia, I should be able to choose my own way.............my only hang up is religion where it was drilled into my head if you take your own life you will not get to Heaven, but I dont think God would want me to be a burden to my family, drain them of $$ to help me just to have me hang on for a few years of being the burden

After watching my dad and grandmother waste away in their late life, I can guarantee you I won't go out like that. Whether I have to do it myself or have an actual doctor do it is totally up to the government.

Patients in hospice can't even die in peace...I'm all for it federally especially after hearing older family members try to express their will to do so when/if that day comes.

It's tough when you look them in the eyes and they ask...who are you? As I stated above I'm 100% for it whether the government wants or not we know the nursing home industrial complex will never let it happen. They will attempt to extract all assets available and leave the rest of family with little to nothing breeding more homelessness and taking away more generational wealth for subpar service.

    It's the Republican way...

Hospitals and nursing homes are 2 of the most noisy, chaotic, non-serene places I can think of. Better than a nascar race, I guess. It's no way to go.

Agreed...my uncle wouldn't even visit a relative there unless he had something to drink beforehand.

From personal experience working in a big local hospital a long, long time ago, the hepatology / nephrology ward where they stuck people waiting to die from liver/kidney failure was the most horrible place I've ever been in my life even though I was just passing through for like ten minutes at a time. It was like a haunted house with all the screaming and moaning and creepy repetitive "chain rattle" noises and hopeless looks, but nobody's acting. Everybody I saw in those wards looked like they were on a ship of the damned. Even the nurses were noticeably harder, less happy people than the nurses on any other floor of the hospital. Seriously, the psych ward was a noticeably much more cheery place.

I wouldn't wish liver/kidney failure on the worst person in the world from what I saw there. It still scares the hell out of me.

If you told me I was in final liver/kidney failure with no hope I know exactly which gun I'd use rather than go through that and I wouldn't have to think hard about it. Having a shot or a pill or something that available that would let me fall away to sleep serenely and die without pain in a situation like that would almost be enough to restore my faith in humanity, which is why I'm pretty sure there will always be resistance to the idea.

I lived with Jesuit priests for nearly 4 years. Had a very strong impact on me when it comes to ethics and morals. I think “don’t commit suicide” is nuanced- I don’t consider someone with a terminal illness and with chronic pain/deteriorating conditions asking for drugs to discontinue their life, committing suicide.

I have spoken to a number of Priests, lay people… medical providers. I witnessed a 45 year old woman get diagnosed with brain cancer, move into our home - two weeks later she couldn’t function. Had to go to high level rehab, didn’t respond to chemo … and then offered radiation that completely fried her brain, and she became childlike and fearful and died a horrendous death because the doctors were not straight forward with her. It ended up being over a million dollars to keep her alive for what they claimed was an extra two weeks… but she had visions, her IQ was that of a 10 year old after the radiation and she was in constant pain and she literally was crying and screaming in fear minutes before she essentially starved to death? Why did she starve to death? Well she was in excruciating fear and pain… but they could not give her medication to assist with her passing… instead, the only other option other to hasten her passing was to stop feeding her in her tubes.

My mom died suddenly 12/20/25 - she did not have a pulse for 15 minutes and offered to heavily medicate her and “bring her back” and did just that. What I knew, but they did not tell my sister and brother is that after 15 minutes without oxygen to the brain, my mom would never mentally be able to take care of herself. I deferred to my sister, they brought my mom back- and then 3 minutes later her heart stopped again and we all said that was it- my mom died, but I knew she wanted to die if she couldn’t be somewhat self sufficient or mentally healthy…. It’s overwhelming to me, but I am grateful they did not bring her back to live as an invalid, in pain and confusion and end up dying anyway within a year…. The rest of the world doesn’t do this type of stuff, only the USA. It is cruel.

You wouldn’t feel this way if you had the experiences I have had. Between relatives and friends dying horrendous deaths - to some of my clients…. There are a lot of people that are being artificially kept alive, regardless of the damage done to them.

FWIW it doesn't say that in the Bible but Jesus did say..."Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life." John 12:25
