I wasn't sure he'd ever live up to his draft position, but he just might do it! He's become an essential rotation piece to this team and is already one of my favorite players to watch. His development has been outstanding.
“Reed is a very talented player. His shooting is his best attribute but he knows the game, he can read the game, he can make passes.” “I think he’s passing those tests with flying colors right now.” “I think Reed can be a star in this league.” - Royal Ivey “The Unc dance”
I'm on the side of Austin's instinct, that the award should be generally reserved for the breakout player of the year who comes out of nowhere, rather than the guy who goes from All-Star to All-NBA. I agree with Maxey that the superstar jump is way harder, but we fundamentally have other ways to recognize that performance jump with MVP voting, All-NBA teams, and All-Star selections. If you look at the end-of-year awards as a snapshot in history, there's not an easy way to recognize the underdog story, the guy who might have had the year of his life, where everything aligned in one shining moment. I hate that it's called the Mikan award, not because he doesn't deserve the honor, but because George was literally the best player of his era from the first time he stepped on the court in college, won five of the first six championships, and would have probably won 6 MVPs if the award had existed. If anything, he's the opposite of MIP. American sports movies are built on the idea of venerating the underdog triumphing when no-one believed in them, even if they don't win it all in the end. I think it's insane for us to not have some way to celebrate and honor similar achievement when it happens in real life.
Yeah, I don't see a potential trade target that's an improvement over Reed. It's time to let him run the offense instead of deferring to KD in isolation.
He's 21, and PG has one of the most delayed and steep learning curves. His projectability right now is insane. Even Curry after year 4 was nowhere close to where he'd be at his peak. Reed is as untouchable as Amen imo.
Yeah I cosign this. After last season I honestly thought he was the one who'd actually fully bust rather than just not get where we needed from the pick like Jalen or Jabari but I'm so happy I was wrong. He genuinely looks more important than Amen right now in how well he's playing, what a great turnaround, looking forward to seeing how far he takes it.
Right now Amen is a starter playing as PG and playing most minutes, BPM, and Net Rating among starters. Lets compare their impact when Reed's starting or at least playing more than 32 minutes a game.
