I am all in on Paredes, the dude is a stud, and we felt his loss when he went down. Are the Astros going to make any moves this off season then a #3-4 SP? I hope were not done, I have to assume Framber is gone and Hunter will be our #1 but we HAVE to have a #2 SP
Paredes is exactly the type of hitter a winning team needs. That said, we are pretty blinded by the lack of production around him last year. He is an All-Star, not an MVP candidate. You have to look at the big picture Altuve, Correa, and Yordan are cemented onto this roster severely limiting his playing time. Walker has significantly less trade value and is owed much more than he's worth, meaning it will cost the team rather than help the team to trade him. Teams want Paredes. This team has limited assets to improve the roster which has significant holes. It is very possible, in the right trade, this team is better without him. I don't want him gone, but would be happy if he is traded and the return is some combination of: a #2 SP and/or a run producing LH bat.
He was the best hitter on this team last year... by far. He's another Yordan tweak away from being the best hitter on this year's team... by far. For a team that's biggest problem last year was the lineup... and not much has changed in regards to the lineup... I don't think it takes that much analysis to figure out why its probably better to keep him. They need everything, but they still need more run producing elements in the everyday lineup. Trading him because "he's the only one that has trade value" is an awful place to be if you have real expectations for the remainder of Altuve/Correa/Yordan's time here.
Sunk cost fallacy shouldn't keep Walker in our lineup. Certainly not if it results in ditching Paredes, who is 8 years younger and much much better. It's OK to trade a guy and eat money if it improves the lineup and frees up some money to use on pitching. We can admit the mistake and move on.
Its simply a matter of perspective and opinion. Would I like him to be the starting 1B, 3B, or DH? - YES. Do I want him to sit on the bench 2-4 games per week? - NO. Does this team have holes that trading him can solve?- YES. Is Correa, Yordan, or Altuve going to sit 2-4 games per week?- NOT A CHANCE. Is Walker going to sit 2-4 times per week?- UNLIKELY. Is Yordan going to play more LF?- Espada says NO. So the Astros can pay Isaac $9-10M to sit on the bench in case there is an injury, or they can trade him and give this team a roster that actually has a chance for a ring.
Yeah, I don’t disagree with you here. I’m just saying you can be a bad defensive team and still make it to the playoffs and win. If you’re a bad hitting team, you probably aren’t even making the playoffs, and if you do, you’re not winning no matter how good your defense may be. Unless you’re including pitching with defense. There’s a reason Pete Alonso is getting paid that huge contract even though he sucks defensively. Same with Juan Soto.
I think you mean "make" the playoffs... really hard to extrapolate simply bad defensive stats within a 2-4 week period, but i'm not seeing a lot of playoff teams that make multiple defensive mistakes per critical game doing very well during those games. Hitting stats also generally a wash in those handful of games. Individual pitching does translate.
They'll figure it out. He's their best everyday hitter that can also play a position (and that's a fact... not perspective or opinion). He's not sitting on the bench that much in any scenario. Altuve is definitely playing too much for his age. Correa shouldn't play everyday either. Yordan should play everyday if healthy. Walker shouldn't play as much if he's not hitting. Putting stuff in all caps makes that point look even more silly. Trading him doesn't solve holes moreso than it makes the lineup that much worse, both now and for the rest of his club controlled years.
Yeah, that’s what I should have said - was in the process of editing it actually when you replied. I see what you’re saying now, and to your point, the 2022 Astros were so dominant defensively and pitching wise that they didn’t need much offense during the playoffs. I’m sure there’s been plenty of other teams that didn’t hit that well during the playoffs but still won it because of defense/pitching.
I agree with all your player evaluations. I simply don't think Joe Espada and Dana Brown will put the best players on the field ahead of other considerations. Without any other considerations such as planned days off or injury: Altuve is starting everyday over Paredes Correa is starting everyday over Paredes Yordan is starting everyday over Paredes. Walker is starting 75%+ games over Paredes A more productive hitter means nothing in their eyes when compared to reputations and contracts.
I don’t believe this. Paredes was their best hitter last year. They will all get as many starts as their bodies will allow. Even if it means Alvarez and altuve play in the field more than they like. Their hitting was the problem last year if you going to trade Paredes you might as well trade Alvarez instead. You will get more for him and maybe save enough money to lengthen the lineup or get your sp2.
What about going in on Tatsuya Imai , I've been looking him up a little. It's a big risk , but he may sign a 4-5 year deal. If doesn't look like the price will be too high, this could a good gamble on pitching , as FA money on pitching is always gambling .
If Espada and Brown suck that much that they can't put the right players on the field, then nothing else matters - the Astros won't win anything regardless. They aren't good enough to overcome that. So trading anyone or keeping anyone actually doesn't matter in that case. If you have to trade someone to force your manager to GM to do something, then the team is dysfunctional before the season ever starts. But based on history, I think the more accurate way to describe what you're trying to say is Espada and Brown won't run the Astros exactly in the way you'd want them to and therefore they must not know what they are doing.
This right here is one of the stupidest posts I've seen in a while here in the Astros forum. To suggest they are so incompetent they are gonna leave their second best all around hitter, who can play multiple positions, on the bench is absurd. If you believe that why are you even bothering to follow this joke of a franchise.
by now, you’ve seen the posts that talk about how Paredes can play 140+ games by playing 15 at 1B, 20 at 3B, 60-80 at 2B and 30-50 at DH. That leaves plenty for Yordan to play 140+, Altuve to play 130-140, Correa 140-145, Pena 150, and Walker 140+. Those dudes were never gonna literally play everyday. I suppose the problem is if Paredes can’t play a competent 2B. I have no problem with the Astros getting creative and seeing if Pena can slide to 2B and Correa picking up more at SS to allow Paredes to play more 3B. Or Correa at 2B. It’s not like any of that will be worse defense than Altuve at 2B
