i'd actually say if there's a community/fan base that can pretty much call the shots on what they need/want... it would be Buffalo's.

Buffalo and Green Bay will be forever exempt from the "big city" politics that drive a lot of these other decisions. Most of the time when a team opts for a dome, it has very little to do with the teams' preference or fan comfort... its so they can be in the running to host other big events at the "city/county/state funded stadium"(where the team gets to keep the profit for all those other events).

Super Bowls, final fours/regionals, concerts, NBA events... that's become the only way these tax subsidized stadiums seem to make sense (even though we know it doesn't really add much to the community/surrounding area growth).

Fans are already likely braving elements prior to the game, showing up at 6am, huddling around warmth in the parking lots, etc.

Houston has NOTHING to do with the stadium. It is ALL Harris County.

While I agree, with the exemption from typical big city politics thing (the biggest issue was whether to bring the Bills back to Buffalo or keep them in Orchard Park), I know a TON of Bills fans. I live an hour and fifteen minutes from the stadium.

I've not heard one fan say they're happy the didn't put a roof on it. It's been the opposite sentiment. Over and over. "Over $1B in taxpayer money and they didn't put a roof on it?!?"

I guess I can get the thought process, somewhat. Having the supposed advantage of the elements, which I don't think it any kind of advantage, to be honest. It sucks for both teams, and you would be extremely hard pressed to ever become efficient at playing in it. Even still. If that's your thoughts process, make a retractable roof and open it part way on snowy game days. It's kind of what they did, in the end, with the seats mostly covered, it's just that the money should have gone a lot further. It's a lot of money spent for what is essentially a carbon copy of a Premier League Stadium.

Don't get me wrong, looks nice in person, but I think the common local should have some issues with it.

One in the same. Those who live in Houston are impacted by all county decisions.

They should first work on obtaining the rights to the Oilers name/logo.

I haven't given a crap in a while, but since you said earlier "Even worse the rodeo is involved in the NRG decisions."

I haven't seen recent figures, but who (post-covid?) brings in more money to the county/city? Historically it was always the Rodeo iirc.

I meant from a standpoint that two very profitable organizations rely 100% on the county funding for upkeep/maintenance but keep ALL the profits from the events they host, with a joke of a “rental agreement”.

When the Texans move into the burbs to make even more money and control all the business’ around it, the rodeo will have to decide how they want the county to handle the NRG wasteland.

This is the part that makes me laugh.

Because it's not going to happen.

Depends on the offer. Cleveland, Chicago, KC, Dallas, New England, the Braves, and probably some other notable team im currently blanking on have set the precedent.

this is the new era of “cookie cutter” stadiums. Build where your season ticket base lives, own all the hotels, restaurants and land around it, profit?

What offer? The one that doesn't want the Rodeo? Lulz.

All these stadiums “districts” are filled with chain everything. Teams don’t own that. They may own the land, but the don’t own the trash establishments that occupy it. It’s like they are trying to pitch an all day suburban experience. Who wants that?

You sure about that? The teams do own/operate the surrounding entertainment and vendors in the Braves situation and New England’s (ones I’m most familiar with). Yes, it’s a pretty vanilla/bland offering… but it’s been proven that downtown stadiums don’t really provide a sustainable surrounding district in all markets. The Astros are also building a similar “district”. NRG will never have one.

of course teams will look to optimize/extort every financial option available to them. And when they get the land gifted to them tax free, it’s just all profit at that point.

The rodeo can’t and shouldn’t really leave NRG. Not sure what sort of leverage they can muster… unless there are surrounding venues that can accommodate that sort of event/crowds.

Try and get the Texans a new stadium without the rodeo involved. At some point here I'll stop laughing.
