What will it take to make you seriously consider an EV?

I rode in a Waymo for the first time when I visited Austin last week. It was fun and nice to not deal with with Uber driver chitchat. It got stuck in the parking lot for a while when it came to pick me up and I didn't know the cues to look for before I could open the doors, but I would ride in one again. Automated cars are one of the areas I see massive public benefit for AI.

 

Curious, how does it know where your standing, like when I use Uber at IAH there are zones and you put in your zone? I think I would be super nervous

 

It didn't really care where I was standing. I tried to call it from a coffee shop parking lot and that was a mistake. I had to call their customer service line when it got stuck and wouldn't let me get inside. They said it would eventually leave and find an open street parking space before the doors would open. Once that happened, I was able to get in easily.

 

I honestly think Elon just bs'es people year after year to bide time so he can get his Mars rocket going, then escape there when nobody's looking, set up a television broadcast studio, and moon the entire planet on tv.

I believe this thread was initially started to talk about EVs for personal use but it has devolved to arguing over who has the worst taxi service.

They survived a Cybertruck crash. Then a fire killed them.
In several instances, Tesla passengers have struggled to access or exit the vehicles during life-threatening emergencies, including fires. Lawsuits allege the company’s futuristic features have caused injuries and deaths.

 

The video at the link suggests that at least one Tesla Taxi was driven by a human during the blackout in San Francisco.

Video from rednote: It seems like the Robotaxi remain unaffected during the SF outage because they were manually driven by the safety monitor. The original poster claim that this particular Robotaxi was on FSD until it got stuck at the very first dead intersection they encountered and the safety monitor needed to take over from FSD to finish the remaining trip.

 

pickups are big market, EVs are mandated, range is same as cars, Powershare is better than cars, platform shares parts with one of the most popular vehicles in the USA.

EV's crashed and Ford's EV tech isn't really good enough to keep it going for when the upswing comes.

 

It's been multiple years since last time I thought about this thread and I still see none of the concerns (range, what to do during hurricane power outages, cold weather, Ipad on wheels that can be nerfed from a distance by manufacturer anytime they feel like it, no real ownership, hard to repair, etc., etc.). Just too many issues. Will continue going with either hybrid or plain old gas vehicles.

 

I've owned an EV 7+ years (two since 2021) and haven't found any of those issues significant. Best vehicle decision I've ever made. Gasoline powered cars are dinosaurs to me.

It's held this long and no doubt it will continue.

One relatively recent development is the cars now drive themselves. The newer car only requires us to back into the garage and park in lots (when we don't like the spot the car chooses). The software for the older car isn't as advanced and requires more intervention at the start and finish (and occasionally en route).
