That looks like just when the ballhandler keeps the ball. When the rollman gets it.... #24 in plays, #7 in ppp, #10 in most turnovers Adams and Capela both have great PPP's on the roll and get the ball about twice as often on the roll per possession than Sengun. Almost like the backup PG grabs a lot of attention on the PnR (i.e., hard to score as a ball handler) and makes high-quality dishes, while Sengun gets a lot of attention when he's out there with the starters. If the backup PG played more with Sengun, it would be interesting to see how the defense would divide its attention.
One of the problems is that the Rockets have VERY few players who have any interest in setting screens to help someone else get going and essentially none of them in the starting lineup. Adams is basically the only player who will gladly do that kind of job. Sengun is more interested in getting his own shots but he's capable if you can get him to be willing. Amen, KD, and Jabari have no interest whatsoever in setting a screen for anyone, ever. As to players scoring off screens, KD, Reed, and Aaron Holiday are very good scoring off screens the team just doesn't prioritize that over going ISO or posting up....things they are bad at, but are higher prestige play types.
Adams spams picks for Reed. Hard to go off a screen that isn't a pick, when going around a pick. Though, the mini-mes lineups with Reed and Holiday have been straight fire offensively.
26th in frequency. (4th fewest) 22nd in turnover frequency (8th lowest). 7th in points per possession. My argument was against the isolation plays and for MORE pick and roll .... think this shows they should do it more? Sengun getting the ball going down hill .... instead of outside the 3 point line?
Like @Joe Joe said Amen is part of the issue with spacing. I think the main issue is the current level of playmaking on this team is just not good enough to be anything other than a dark horse contender. This was the same issue as last year.
This. I'm still very optimistic with Amen and think he will reach level up..... But he just still seems a bit behind offensively and has a bit of that "Jalen Green attacking without a plan" attributes. I think it's debatable about Ime... but that's for another thread.
Are those numbers from NBA.com? On isolation vs PnR...I think it really depends on personnel. KD and Reed should use Sengun picks. Long term, I think the Rockets offense is headed towards a heavy usage of Reed-Sengun PnR. I'd like more Reed-Sengun PnRs now, but not sure Reed's ballandling is there for it to be main offense. Also, I don't think other players are ready for heavy usage of Reed-Sengun as the Rockets just don't have many shooters that relocate well or shoot off of movement. I'm fine with KD isolations as those are proven not to have a big drop in effectiveness in the playoffs. With the Rockets' offensive rebounding, those isolations turn into solid half-court offense. Amen, he's been very good at times, but his effectiveness is very defense-dependent.
@WoodDavidWood is right in that OTE/GLI just failed (implying they even tried) at teaching kids any sort of fundamentals. Amen, Ausar and JG all basically relied on athleticism to get them by and now are having to deal with what happens when that doesnt work anymore. Scoot Henderson is an example of a player that doesnt possess the physical traits of those players and when you compound it with his size and middling athleticism....you get what you get. Amen is smart and he'll get there but right now he is less developed than I'd prefer offensively. He's trying and the one thing I'm really not liking is that he seems to be in his head now. He's not putting up 3s he should or middies he should if he's going to be lead ball handler. And if hes not going to do that then he needs to go back to being a utility player and Reed needs to get more of those reps until he's ready.
OTE/G League was awful for the blue chip HS kids. In related news, there’s a poster on TikTok “trainlikenbastar” who’s posted the shooting training that the twins did with Mike Miller. Not sure when they trained but it seems like Amen has made progress. Hysterical when Miller tells him to “miss right” because of the way the ball comes off his hand. Part of the issue that I can see is that Amen’s feet and chest are square to the backboard which is wrong and it’s throwing his form off. The human body doesn’t work like that for some reason. I’d encourage him or anyone else to look at Klay shooting. He’s certainly not squared with the backboard.
I feel like this franchise hasn’t considered attitude and IQ as much with prospect. I thought that signing with a Gleague team instead of college red flags would be going up all over the place do Jalen amens case is different he signed with a different pro league and has that killer mindset shawn Marion is who he should talk to. I’m not joking. At his size he learned to shoot effectively , amen needs to have a convo with him
I don’t disagree that you could conceivably be an effective shooter with a wonky form, it’s just more difficult. The jump shot form is a machine and should be repeatable. Poor Ausar was struggling with shot form with one hand from 3 feet out.
This is a weird thing to say when he was forced to run around like a chicken with his head cut off the last few seasons doing nothing but set screens for the loser who wqs traded. And never complained about having to sacrifice his game or the team's chances by being relegated to doing that.
Castle and Sheppard are two very different players and what the Rockets and Spurs need is very different. Having said that - some people are really under estimating Castle. He is extremely young and is running the offense for a team and is doing very well getting to the lane and finishing at a high rate. His playmaking has improved and he will make the All Defense team this year.
We're seeing different things. Claiming Sengun has blinders on for his shot only is not what I see out there. To be honest 7 assists a game also doesn't suggest that.
