This is a good point. A TON can change in 3 seasons. These days a farm system turns over nearly completely in that time. As long as an organization can maintain a rolling 3 year outlook of contention, there is always a good chance they can keep it going beyond that. Houston will be a competitive team in 2026 with a lot of upside, and they don’t have any major pending free agents outside of Bryan Abreu, so they will very likely be competitive in 2027 as well. The 2028 outlook is more cloudy because there are several key players reaching free agency (5 of their 9 current starting position players in Paredes, Pena, Meyers, Sanchez, Walker, plus Cristian Javier), but they also could have quite a bit of financial flexibility. But back to your point. There are at least 5 position players and a boatload of pitchers who could be established in the majors as really good players by the time Pena and Brown and others reach free agency.
At this point, I wonder if we're just getting thrown in. Skeptical but it would be great. I guess SP2 would count as top tier.
Maybe it's reversed. Astros are trying to pawn off LMJ and Javier as Top Tier talent, but no takers as of yet.
They were both Top 50 prospects, what the **** are you talking about? They both should have been signed to extensions after their rookie seasons.
As we try and dissect where this team is now and where this team may be in 3-5 years (usually a fruitless/impossible exercise based on turnover)... I am reminded that one of the most important reasons why the golden era kicked off and persisted (and not often mentioned) is the OUT OF NOWHERE development of both Altuve (as a HOFer) and Kuechel (as a CYA winner). Keuchel really did give them a true ace from 2014-2017ish that was nowhere on the bingo card based on the existing state of the farm at the time. Obviously we know the Altuve story. Hopefully that sort of luck will happen again at some point for the current regime. Maybe they already exhausted it with Yordan in 2019... or maybe Yanier was the diluted version of it? Will be interesting.
We joke about it… and his chase rate was no laughing matter… but Yanier has a possibility to unlock something and elevate to a different level that will make his value/impact even more noticeable. He got better as the year went on last year after he dug himself into an awful hole. He’s still young enough to make adjustments/improvments as Pena did. Just needs to put the work in.
I may be wrong, and you guys can keep the receipts, but I bet Yanier has more All-Star appearances than Pena when all is said and done.
I'm afraid that ship sailed when Jeremy suddenly switched to Scott Boras in the middle of extension talks last year.
He has basically been a 3 WAR player each of his first three seasons. He is certainly capable of a lot more. Last year he had some bad BABIP luck. If he can get any plate discipline he is likely a 5-6 WAR player. Still - it is very possible he is a 4 WAR player over the next couple of seasons, he should be entering his prime.

Well that's interesting. I thought his hammy was injured really bad and he needed treatment or rest for a long time? Rest of Dec Jan Feb Mar to early April to heal er up. Anyone w info about his hammy? Hammy of Paredes?
