It's one of the reasons it's very difficult to have a personal relationship with people around you that are MAGA. I look at them and think wow, this person is easily brainwashed, has zero logical or critical thinking skills and has unfounded hatred towards select group of people. Why would I want be friends with them?

I was arguing with a family member about Trump last night. He's better than Trump in every way and I love him to death. But yeah... it's not easy sometimes. To his credit, he will listen and admits sometimes that I may be right.
I want to nudge people against this way of thinking. For lots of Americans, politics is not something where they would even think logic or critical thinking applies. Politics is ultimately about people, so for many, they just have a gut reaction to some people, plus they want to belong to their local social groups, and bingo, there it is. They happily pull the R lever and defend it when whiny liberals start posting graphs, using quotes, and numbers, etc. "But you voted for so-and-so." I'm not saying it feels much better, but plenty of otherwise kind people just simply do not put thinking caps on for politics.

I totally get this, but you are a better person than I am. I no longer speak to or associate with any family or friends who are trumpers or part of the maga cult. Initially, I tried to tolerate and understand the differences in opinions , but at some point, the complicity in supporting racism, sexism and complete lies was too much. You can show the cult factual evidence to dismantle their harmful beliefs, but regardless of objective facts, they will always deflect and stand with the delusional sundowning man. The same people I cut off from my life have done the same to others, so I don't have much guilt for removing myself from their lives. It's more sad than anything. I have friends who are conservative but not so addicted to trump and maga that they worship him like Christ. There's a huge difference between maga/Trump and authentic conservatives/republicans. Unfortunately, the line has blurred to the point of chaos since Trump began his journey to represent the "poorly educated" who he loves. It's still shocking that he won the popular vote ...I'm sure there are countless cult members who are too embarrassed to acknowledge their mistakes, so instead, they're riding with this miserable administration until the end.
You need to do what my wife's family in Ireland does. If you don't talk about it, it does not exist. This goes for sickness and all other uncomfortable situations.

Same here, we simply don't discuss it which is sad and wonderful at the same time. Last year I did make a joke that we should all simply NOT vote as we just cancel each other's vote................that went over as well as you think it did LOL
I'm no better than anyone. In fact, I totally understand your thinking. I just believe we're more than our biggest mistakes, and I know these people have genuine good in them. I have sadly "lost touch" with some MAGA family and, for reasons only they could tell you, have a number of relatives that apparently want nothing to do with me. I find that strange, I have good memories of times we shared in years past, but now... it's like I'm nothing to them. I'm not sweating it. Life is short and if this is what they're about, or what they need to make it through life, so be it. I have my limits too. I could never have a partner that was MAGA. Never. Not enough patience for that ****.
I think over a larger population pool it is smart to eat and live a certain way. Having said that there are certainly many exceptions and people fail to realize that many conditions are genetic. My old man was black out drunk and a smoker by 12 years old. He has smoked now for going on 65 years and his alcohol consumption has fluctuated between 2 beers a day - to a liter of vodka a day at points in the past. He has abused drugs - uppers for 60+ years....... from copious amounts of cocaine to prescription drugs and gas station viagra- steroids and HGH. That doesn't even get into his food adventures and the stresses of being a part time money launderer. He is closer to 80 than 70 and is sharp as a tac, can physically do whatever he wants and is on sedentary because he chooses to be. Lots of people that don't abuse their bodies have died before him -- and as my mom will say, my dad has no right to be alive.

Not violent - more of the type of guy that could charm everyone, and very charismatic........ someone has managed to never suffer any physical harm from anyone. Only time I know he got "screwed over" was when he was mailing (yes they did this like 25 years ago) cocaine to Montana because your profits triple between Texas and Montana. He lost a decent amount of money because the people that he mailed the stuff to did not send him back his portion of the profits, and while he wasn't afraid of the girl he was sleeping with up there (cheating on my mom), he didn't want to deal with her brothers who were part of the AB. Good times...... nothing like sitting in class knowing your dad is mailing cocaine and wondering if he will be arrested when you go home each day.... or worrying that he will disappear going on a trip to Montana or Connecticut.
