Giannis just isn't the same player he used to be defensively. If it was five years ago, you make the Sengun for Giannis swap in a heartbeat. The way Alpi's playing this season, IDK. I kind of want to see where he peaks. I don't know if he'll ever get to the level of Giannis' peak, but he might very well be better than the current edition, let alone whatever Giannis is two, three, four years from now. Sengun has already been winning the H2H matchups against him.
Another big thing that I think people aren't really considering here is that OKC exists. This is a juggernaut team that looks unbeatable, how stupid would we have to be to go "all in" on a short window that lines up perfectly with a team at the peak of their powers? With our core of young players it's looking like we could be a 50+ win team for over a decade, why give that all up for two years where we would STILL be the heavy underdogs against OKC? The timing of it is just so stupid. I pray that our front office understands and agrees with everything I've written above. It would just be so so so stupid to trade for Giannis.
Statistically Giannis is having his second best season being his last MVP season. Not sure why people think he’s toast. I’m not saying we should trade for him, but the dude is still a monster.
He's still a fantastic overall player, I just think his defense has really dropped off and his box score stats are disguising a real decline in his overall value. His offensive game has always been very predictable, albeit still highly effective during the regular season. I think the predictability is why he's only really had playoff success when he was a DPOY caliber player on the other end. Honestly, he is probably still a better player than Sengun right now, despite Sengun's recent head-to-head success. I'm just skeptical that's going to continue for more than another season or two. And, as @kspires999 mentioned, Sengun is getting paid well below the max while Giannis is getting the supermax.
A Giannis trade would suck more than any sucking of all time. Terrible fit unless you trade Amen. OKC is absolutely amazing this year, but they are a Chet injury away from being gettable.
Yeah, Ant is one of only a few players I'd consider trading a real haul for right now. Still not Sengun though. It seems like the time to trade for him would likely be in a couple of years though. He'd be the ideal successor to KD's shotmaking ability.
Right now Giannis is better than Sengun, no doubt about it. However, Sengun is still playing at an all-star level, gets paid $20 million less than Giannis, and is only 23 with room to grow and in a similar career trajectory as Jokic (although I personally don't think he will be the next Jokic though but can definitely be 90% if he keeps improving). Is 2-3 years of declining Giannis going to be worth it to match up against OKC at the height of their powers? I don't see it. I wouldn't do the trade because in 2 to 3 years Sengun is most likely the better player.
It doesn’t makes sense to me than guards are blown by at a higher rate than centers though. I am guessing Sengun is the only center there because the others don’t qualify for 100 plays. And still he might be worse than others because of the aggressive close ups. It doesn’t necessarily show that he is doing a bad job.
