Have you heard of the plan where the government would create an investing account for a child at the same time they would get a social security number? The account would be federally funded with $1000 seed capital into the account which would be turned into an S&P 500 ETF. The money would be accessible at 18 for qualified educational expenses (20% of value) and the rest of the money would grow until age 50.

It has bipartisan support but I think it’s short-sighted.

The supporters justify the price tag by saying we give so much to foreign aid and it would be a rounding error.

Regardless of the cost, the government doing forced investing of money into the stock market seems like a poor idea in general.

If I am understanding this, assuming the SP x10 in 20 years, they can only pull out $2000 for college expenses?

I used to feel this way, but the government's been backstopping the market as far back as the mid-90s. Any fear of corruption or meddling has been baked in and normalized.

    What could possibly go wrong...

I keep reading " Baby Bonds" as Berry Bonds and thought I'd fallen into some Q Anon distopian reality involving Comet Ping Pong.

Bumping this because they've renamed it to Trump Accounts and Michael Dell has vowed to personally fund $250 for children who are 10 or under who were born before Jan. 1, 2025 (total contribution $6.25 billion)

I believe the federal "baby bonds" funds are for kids born in the last 3 years, and Dell is covering the 4-10 years.

instead of making childcare, healthcare, education, and every day necessities more affordable for Americans, they propose little stopgap measures like this hoping the peasants will be satisfied with crumbs

    lol

You can forgo your Baby Bonds, as can all other liberals, if you want to complain about these benefits.

Trump is planting the seeds of prosperity and teaching people to invest from an early age -- these are great things for society. So many poors are poor because they don't know how to invest. This traps them into multi-generational poverty. Their kids' kids will be living paycheck to paycheck. Let's put a stop to that and encourage ownership. That's why run down communities, such as urban inner cities, are so poorly maintained. No one owns anything. As an example, how many times have you washed a rental car? In similar fashion, the urban inner city folks do not take care of their apartments or housing projects because they don't own them. Ownership is the best hedge against inflation -- if you don't own, you rarely create wealth. An important lesson for all reading this to learn.

    GOOD DAY

So, apparently this was part of the Big Beautiful Bill and now some Billionaire is going to donate aka bribe 6.5 Billion? And he is going to do this out of the goodness of his heart LOL...................grift coming in 3..2..1

All children born between 2025 and 2028 will reap a baby shower gift from Congress and President Donald Trump: a $1,000 deposit into a “Trump Account.”

Think of "Trump Accounts" as seed money to encourage children and families to save and build wealth for the many expenses of adulthood.

“It’s an IRA for kids,” said Evan Morgan, a principal in the tax advisory group at Kaufman Rossin, an accounting and advisory firm, who spoke to USA TODAY in August.

Trump Accounts are part of the tax and spending package signed into law this summer by President Trump. They join a crowded field of tax-advantaged savings plans that help Americans navigate the costs of education, health care and retirement, among other things.

Well it is taxable when your child matures.
It's a great lesson for children.
Way to go kiddo. Your account yielded 25k.
    Now give the Government 30%.

Still a good thing though. I think
