Honestly at $25 mil for one year next season, as long as Fred is back to full health and playing like it, he’d be a good fit as that 3rd guard in the backcourt to Reed and Amen; help them both continue to develop, while providing impact off the bench. For just one year we could do worse, and our guard depth isn’t great generally.
The NBA gives every player who returns to a team an implied no-trade clause for 1 year deals. The NBA is worried about cap circumvention. If a player wants to establish Bird rights or partial Bird rights on a one-year deal, the NBA wants the player to stay with that team such that he loses his Bird rigths if traded. To protect player, player is given an implied no trade clause. For FVV, he is on a one-year contract with a player option for a 2nd year. Prior to an option being exercised, the contract is treated as a 1 year contract such that FVV would lose his Bird rights and as such has a no-trade clause implied. However, provided things weren't changed in the last CBA*, if FVV accepts the player option, he would retain the Bird rights if traded. The Rockets would have to find a place FVV wants to go to convince FVV to accept player option to keep his Bird rights if traded, and then trade happens. *Per Coon's FAQ on previous CBA.
Not to use all caps, and to convince FVV to accept his player option by finding a team FVV wants to be traded. If FVV isn't fine being traded, he can't be traded this year.
Reed and Amen are going to be much better at this next season. The reps they're getting right now are priceless. I don't know if FVV will be worth $25m at his age and after this injury. He was already relatively injury prone. In general I think we'd be perfectly fine without FVV and Adams. That's $40m in salary that could probably be replaced easily. Let's hope we can get a good playoff run out of him.
The ONLY reason for a team to acquire FVV this year is for cap relief in 26 if he does *not* exercise his option - so, in sum: To trade FVV this year, you have to convince him to accept his option with a new team to keep his Bird Rights. I don't think is hard, the Bird Rights benefit him. To trade FVV this year, you have to convince Fred NOT to exercise his option, so that the new team gets cap space. Ain't gonna happen.
It's still TBD and FVV is currently a good card to keep in our back pocket until how we see how the young core fares. There will definitely be some growing pains
Of course, another team is not going to give up a valuable asset solely for FVV. The Rockets either will have to accept a contract with more years or sweeten the pot with a FRP or 2 (or Tari) depending on who the Rockets are getting.
I truly can see a team that would want him to be there next year at 25m. Especially if he gets to start. We’ve already treated him the right way
But at the cost of what? Between Reed & Amen, I don't think PG is a problem after the first ~quarter of the season, and they are only going to get better Where else could you spend that money to better your chances? Maybe you upgrade the 2 guard spot instead?
To be clear, I’m agnostic about trading Fred, and so much depends on what u could get for him or what assets you’d have to package him with. And a lot has to do with how impactful he may still be as a player, post-injury. So there are a lot of variables. I’m just saying that if he comes back healthy, and resumes his career track record as a good shooter and defender who can play both guard spots, it might be worth it to just play out that last yr with him. If he’s severely diminished then of course I think u move on. But if he can still play, I think the org will keep him next season. we aren’t getting away from our core of Sengun and Amen. A healthy Fred still really compliments that core. I think both Fred and Reed are capable of playing either guard spot so I don’t think it’s got to be an either/or with Reed and Fred for one yr. Good teams have 3 starting-caliber guards. if we do trade Fred it should be as part of a package for another core piece. Otherwise I doubt it will be worth it.
At this point you are dragging peeps like Tate and Unc along because you think they can help you with wins and injuries. They are 4th stringers rofl. You can sell fans on Adams even Capela to some degree but out of desperation lol. Might as well play Crawford......
I think we almost have to trade Fred. Our window is closing fast with KD's age and big looming extensions for Tari, Reed, and Amen. If any team has a chance to beat OKC, they won't do it with 25 million in dead weight. All that said, I'm not sure there are any deals that make sense right now.
Ok so now there's no reason for Fred to approve the trade, no reason for a team to want Fred to approve the trade, but there's also no reason for the Rockets to do it because they'd be giving up extra players just to get FVV off the roster 7 months before his option date in order to limit their own flexibility going forward Not sure how much more conclusively we can establish that FVV is not getting traded this year but if we dig down deep, I bet we can find more
