Biggest disappointment this year so far is Tugler not taking the next step and developing an offensive game and continuing to commit silly fouls.

It's early, still November, but he needs to step up. The block shocks are great and impactful but going 1-7 from the floor and only playing about 20 minutes a game because of foul trouble is too, but not in a good way.

Yea, Tugler is still as out of control as ever. I'll give him a pass since he had surgery and was only just getting back to 100%.

We did not suffocate them. Not connected on defense. The traps had little impact tonight.

And we had no offensive direction in the last 2 minutes. That’s on coach. Uzan and Sharpe have been unreliable to get their own shot in the clutch. Whereas Cenac has an unguardable post up move that we could milk. It remains an issue.

The Cougars need a lot of work; they are a long, long way from tournament-ready. A loooooong way. They are making average teams look great.

With a matchup against Tennessee looming Tuesday in the Players Era Festival, Kelvin Sampson said Monday night's close call against Syracuse and the double-digit lead Houston squandered in the final minutes wasn't the by-product of an unfocused team.

"We're not good enough to look ahead," Sampson said after the 78-74 overtime win. "You saw the way we played [Monday]. I see it every day. Some days we're better than others. This is not last year's team. I'm not saying they can't be eventually, but they're certainly not now. Look at the mistakes we make."
    ...
A frustrated Sampson slammed a clipboard onto the ground during a timeout in the second half.

"It is hard to beat any really good team," he said. "It's hard to beat them when you're making silly mistakes. 'What are we doing here?' But I try not to overreact to things in November."

Halfway through his postgame news conference, however, Sampson said he wanted to stop talking about what Houston did wrong to focus on what a shorthanded Syracuse squad had done right.

"Let's give credit to coach Adrian Autry and let's give credit to Syracuse," Sampson said. "His kids played hard. They played good enough to win. We played good enough to win, too, and I'm glad we did, but I was impressed with Syracuse tonight."
    ...
"One thing about all the teams here, whether you play good or you don't play good, those experiences are important," he said. "So it's important to have good experiences, but it's also important to have experiences where maybe you don't play so well because this is not the last time that that's going to happen. But how do you win on nights, maybe, when you don't play very good? How do you figure it out?"

Watching the Coogs play basketball this season is VERY stressful. Coach is right, they are NOT last year's team. But I think they have the potential to be better. Good to see the seniors rounding into form. Syracuse played like their hair was on fire.

It is the most stressful of all the sports teams I follow. And has been ever since Sampson took the team over. I blame it on him. Because I really love this team and hate to see them lose.

Yes, I too blame Sampson for UH being the winningest program in college hoops over the past 8 years :)

Vols size is a problem for UH, who run 3 players over 6'8" out there, Vols have about 6

UH looked good early when they could get boards and push it into early offense. When they get bogged down in the halfcourt it's horrible. They struggle to get into a play with more than 10 seconds on the clock.

Defense should never slump, though, and that's what's keeping UH ahead.

Only 6 combined TO in the 1H, this is a fun game b/t 2 very good and athletic teams.

Also: Saiko hit both of his FTs!!!

Tugler, between the idiot fouls and complete inability to hit a layup, might be the most frustrating player I've seen in a long time, despite how great he is on D, setting screens, etc

Sharp not good enough to be on the floor with these guys. He’s killing us. Gets his shot stuffed and isn’t hitting his jumper.

Offense looks dead in the water. This team looks worse than last year.

Coogs total inability to run a halfcourt offense is baffling.

UH just has no interior size off the bench to give him and Cenac a break. It killed them vs Florida last year, and it's killing them tonight
