It’s the NBA’s Most Devastating Play—and It Starts With a Missed Shot
Nobody in the NBA is better at gobbling up rebounds than Steven Adams. So the Houston Rockets have turned missed shots into part of a spectacular attack.

    https://www.wsj.com/sports/basketba...b?st=dWsgSZ&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

    excerpt:

At first glance, Steven Adams looks nothing like a major contributor for an NBA championship contender.

He possesses no fancy dribbling moves. He hits barely two shots a night. He hasn’t made a 3-pointer in five years.

But Adams, a backup center for the Houston Rockets, happens to be the most dominant force in basketball when it comes to one particular, often overlooked skill. Whenever one of his teammates misses a shot, Adams outmuscles everyone on the court to grab it, giving the Rockets an endless string of do-overs that they have turned into the best offense in the NBA.

“It’s just a battle down there,” said Adams. “It’s trench work.”

That trench work has paid off in droves. Despite playing less than 22 minutes per game, Adams gobbles up the most offensive rebounds in the entire NBA at 5.1 a night. On the whole, the Rockets grab more than 40% of their own missed shots—giving them the highest rate of second chances since at least 1997, when the NBA started charting the statistic.

Those second chances have turned the Rockets—who have won nine of their first 12 games—into the league’s most efficient offense, averaging more than 125 points per 100 possessions. That’s better than Stephen Curry’s Warriors, Luka Doncic’s Lakers, and Victor Wembanyama’s Spurs.

“It’s about getting more possessions than the other team,” Adams said. “Even if you shoot worse than them, that’s just gonna up your chances to win.”
    Clearly it's Steven Adams's Rockets. :D

A stat you may find interesting - there is actually one player in the NBA (min 100 minutes) with a higher offensive rebounding rate than Steven Adams. And lucky for us, he's on our team, it's Clint Capela.

J.R, this is ban-worthy. Don't you EVER bring Angel Reese into the GARM again!

Kind of makes it a little more clear why they signed Capela, who is actually #1 in offensive rebounds per 36 minutes just ahead of Adams.

Another thing it makes me wonder is if all the noise about us considering picking Clingan wasn't just noise, as he's #3 on that list.

I think it's pretty clear, in any case, that the front office/coaching staff consider offensive rebounding to be a major point of focus for the organization.

....and yet it was part of the myth that Stone was bad at draft pick management.

Oh, absolutely a steal to get him for just 2nd rounders. He's starting-caliber IMO.

And this is why our "PACE" is "bottom 5" in the league:

    PACE = (FGA - ORB) + TOV + 0.44 * FTA

The more offensive boards you get, the lower* your "PACE" is

    *Lower, not slower

The hare sprinted faster, but the tortoise had the faster pace — and that’s what won the race.

Sounds like we need to start giving more credit to the bros throwing up bricks and assisting Stephen Adams.
