Ime put Reed in towards the middle of the 3rd quarter, and played him most of the 4th until the Rockets had the lead. As soon as the Rockets lost the lead, Ime put Reed back in (maybe a minute on the bench). Ime didn't play Reed in overtime much as he had played him from the middle of the third through down the stretch in regulation with little rest.

Ime did not know in regulation that it would go to overtime.

There are some great players who just work better for their team coming off the bench. It's part of what makes players like Manu so effective, and why the sixth man award exists. That role makes sense to me on this team, too, with a starting lineup featuring Durant and Sengun, but we'll see.

Getting burned by Bane certainly didn't help, but nonetheless, I agree with your overarching point that Ime showed faith in Reed in most of the games other important moments.

... Still it was clear we needed defense in that last minute of overtime.

Reed starting turns Amen into a different and MUCH more valuable player. Night and day.
In fact, he makes all the starters better on the offensive end.
Yes, the defense changes, but that will gradually improve.
It's just a matter of time at this point.

On getting burned, this is like the third or fourth time I've seen this. When did this happen? The only points I can see that Bane remotely scored on Reed were free throws after Reed tripped him, and Reed getting trucked on a moving screen by Isaac forcing Adams to switch onto Bane who nailed a three. I can't find video of how Bane got to the line in the 1st half so there is a chance Bane blew by Reed causing a foul. I don't consider getting flagrantly fouled by Reed, shooting a three over Adams after a switch, and maybe getting a couple of free throws as Bane burning Reed. Reed nailed at least two three-pointers with Bane on him, and put him in a hostage dribble once to nail a mid-range shot.

Bane toasted Holiday and JSJ much worse.

Franz (maybe someone else as well) got Reed a few times in a short period in the 3rd leading mostly to free throws.

I totally agree. As long as Reed can get the ball up the floor QUICKLY and make a good pass to KD or Sengun for them to setup the play, I think it's then time for him to start, and move Amen back to the role he's already a superstar in.

Having Amen bring the ball up, and then have to get into the play afterwards is just using up energy, and wasting time in the play. The ball is going to KD or Sengun at the top of the key when the ball cross half court anyways. Whoever is playing the perimeter floor spacer in the play going to have to come up to where Amen is and Amen is going to have to get to his spot. So you are just wasting time and energy of everyone in the play.

Start Reed, and play Holiday more as well IMO. If KD has to miss some time then you put Amen in the position on most plays to be the lead guard facilitating the play at the top of the key with Sengun. But right now KD is balling out of his mind. Like what the hell are we doing here with Amen?

Of course if Reed starts doing dumb things again like killing his dribble at the half court, or getting scared and throwing the ball away frantically then we got problems, and can go from there.

There was a play late in the game where Bane got by Reed a little too easy...

Bane didn't score but he ended up getting an assist to the player that snuck in behind KD for an easy layup...

Reed did give up the penetration way too easily, but there was no need for KD to lose track of the baseline cutter because Sengun was already in the lane in help position to contest Bane at the rim.

It can be argued that Reed allowing Bane to get into the lane so easily is what set off the chain of events, but with how far Sungun was in the lane there was likely going to be an open shot somewhere. KD just could have done a better job not allowing 1 of the two guys that would be open to cut right behind him for an open look at the rim. Sengun Rotates...Help the helper....Happened kind of fast and it's true if Reed doesn't allow the easy penetration then it's probably moot...

Go to the 5:22 mark in this video:

Also, like you and others said Bane torched Jabari much more than he torched Reed. People just like to hyperfocus on him and make his mistakes monumental.

Thanks. I honestly did not remember one play that I thought Reed was burned by Bane which I why I looked at all of his shot attempts.

I posted this in another discussion, but I’m ready to see Reed start now, but I can see both sides. Right now, starting both Amen and Okogie is a bit clunky, as they are both “non-shooters”. I know Josh has a pretty high 3 point percentage now (45%), but he’s a career 31% shooter, so I expect that to regress to the mean - he’s also taking fewer than 3 attempts per game. Why not take some pressure off of Amen having to ball handle and run the offense? Amen’s defense does not look the same this year, and I wonder if part of that is the added responsibilities on offense.

On the other hand, Reed has played more minutes than Josh 4 of the last 5 games (that 5th game was basically even). He’s coming off the bench, but he’s basically playing starter’s minutes, as he’s playing the 5th most minutes over that stretch. With Tari out, I do like the spark Reed provides off the bench. He jump starts things from around the 6:00 mark in the 1st. I worry if we put him as a starter, now your spark off the bench is Holiday? Okogie?

Should be starting yesterday. Should have played more last year.

    “He’s too reachy/handsy/grabby”
    “His defense”
“Not about Reed but rather Okogie”
    “We need Okogie’s defense”
    “Not a demotion”
“He’ll get more opportunities with the 2nd unit”
“Not about who starts but who finishes”

“I want to see Reed be aggressive.”
“He’s aggressive now but I want to see it in non-garbage minutes”
“Good to see it in non-garbage minutes but I want to see it against great teams.”
(Soon) “Yeah, it’s a nice run but Jeremy Lin had a nice run.”
“Let’s see it over a full season.”

    Sound familiar?

    “He’s too foul prone”
    “His stamina is bad”
    “His defense”
    “His lack of shooting”
“Not about Sengun but rather Kevin and Jalen”
“Sengun will get more touches & opportunities with the 2nd unit”
    “Not a demotion”
    “It’s his stamina”
    “It’s his defense”
    “It’s his lack of shooting”
    “We need a lob threat”
    “It’s his work ethic”
    “He needs the push”
    “He needs the coaching”
“Yeah, he had an ok year but let’s see him/can he do it again”
“Let’s see him hold up in the playoffs before we commit to him long term”

Ime: be a backup point guard for us

With Okogie, it wouldn't be surprising if his 3P% stayed higher than his career average. The last three seasons combined + this one, he has actually been a 34.2% three point shooter. I do not think he will stay over 40%, but I can see him being something like a 36% guy moving forward, given he's gradually been improving over time and is now hitting what should be his peak years as a player.

The main issue with starting Reed is that our defense has already taken a significant hit from changes to our rotation, and he is a significant downgrade in that area.

yeah, but to me, less pressure on Amen offensively with Reed out there should hopefully yield more energy to expend on defense, thus:

Amen extra defensive pressure + Reed’s shooting and offense > Okogie’s defense over Reed’s

I'm still skeptical Reed is ready to start because of defense. I will note that the Rockets have gotten better at mitigating Reed's defensive weakness lately. Whether the end of this season or early next, Reed will likely be starting at some point.

I think he's doing great off the bench and providing a steady hand and consistent shot.

If Amen were to get hurt I could see him moving into the starting lineup but otherwise, I think for now the coaches like what he's bringing off the bench as that spark.

If the starters are capable of overwhelming the opponent from the start, we don't need a spark off the bench. We need a good defender to hold the lead. If the starters have a bad shooting night, Holiday can provide some shooting off the bench.

A lineup of Sengun, Smith, Durant, Sheppard and Thompson is quite lethal offensively.

Didn't Bugs have a double-barreled shotgun under that red cape? Are you saying Reed plays defense like Ja Morant?
