I think point 1 is forgotten in a few weeks. Point 2 is not. That will have sustained pain for many voters across the political spectrum. Of course, Republicans will say Democrats caved on the premium spike.
I think the Dems won, they got through the elections with a democratic sweep, they got to get SNAP funded while showing TRUMP tried to defund it, and now 15m people are going to be kicked off healthcare by the BBB- this was the time to settle and then lean into the midterms.....I know people wanted concessions but the Epstein files are the key here. Good job IMHO. DD
Easy - they didn’t have to worry about retribution at the ballot box from all the folks who aren’t having to make any sacrifices as a result of the shutdown.
They weren't willing to drive the country into a ditch to grab political power. They prioritized the good of the country over Democrat party loyalty. It's an argument for term limits, actually. GOOD DAY
Sounds like Republicans who decided to start doing the right thing after deciding not to run for re-election.
Or a primary voting system that does not award loyalty over everything else -- including the nation. RCV. I’m not ever expecting today Republicans to prioritize the good of the country over loyalty, but I still expect Democrats to do so.
Exactly. They got nothing. All that pain endured and good will earned to just be thrown away for the promise of a consideration. Whoop tee phuckin doo. Don't worry, Charlie Brown. I'm sure Lucy won't pull the ball away this time!
I feel like we need a new rule. Anytime there is a government shutdown, it should trigger a snap election like they have in the UK or Australia. Let the voters immediately voice their opinion about how to handle such crises. This would incentivize compromise in the Congress and also dis-empower runaway leadership.
The Democratic leadership is still clueless - they still haven't adapted to American is 2025. They seem to think it is 2012. The American people are going to have to force them out. So out of touch
Shutdowns have traditionally yielded ZERO. A gov shutdown is like shutting down your own body. It should be reserved for emergencies, cancer, rogue systems (illegal actions), etc. It should not be used to roll back a totally legal action or demand changes outside of the standard gov process. My take is they should NOT have shut down the gov over a totally legal ACA premium hike. That was not legislation pushed through illegally, or by bad faith means, or similar slimy process or method. It was totally legit and a direct result of the American public's actions. The process to correct that is not via a gov shutdown.
They're not clueless. They're bought, paid for, and beholden to the same people who ostensibly make up the Republican party. At this point if you're a Democrat with half a brain you might as well just become a "never Trump" Republican, because you will probably have a better chance of affecting change as one of those folks than you will with the current Democratic party. At least Trump is eventually going to die. The Democratic leadership being controlled opposition is never going to change.
They are clueless - because I don't think that it is going to work for them for much longer. It works when you have two somewhat moderate parties that play by the same rules. Trump has changed that - and the Democratic establishment hasn't figured that out.
Dude the Republicans were tearing up the constitution and all the rules long before Trump got there. They basically lost their ****ing minds when 9/11 happened and then lost them again when Obama got elected.
Correct. It shouldn't be a "we're doing this because we lost at the ballot box and its our only leverage" play. Sadly the way our elections are run, this is becoming more common. That being said, IF YOU DO IT, you need to be prepared to do it for real, and ride it out to the last breath. If you shut the government down and then fold, all you have done is signal to your opposition that you are weak and will always fold to them if they are depraved enough. What the Democrats just did, strategically and morally, is the worst outcome. They created a bunch of self-inflicted harm, got nothing to show for it, and emboldened their opposition.
Post 911 under Bush was certainly bad - but what Trump is doing from a corruption standpoint is well beyond what Bush and Obama did. The American people also tolerate a lot more than in the past.
And they’ll try again in Jan ’26? LOL. It’s the worst outcome because they went into it without thinking through the endgame, or worse, they thought they were playing a political game and lost the whole ballgame. But… I don’t think it matters. The pain of all this, and what’s coming, is real, and political theater isn’t that interesting to most people. The party in charge always pays the price.
There are no real winners here, the end game of extending the ACA benefits were not going to happen so I really don't know what they thought would happen. In the meantime, SNAP was about to get held up and the ATC were not getting paid along with many Federal workers, at least now SNAP can get back on track, the ACA benefits can now be discussed in person and if the GOP doesn't extend them they will be on the hook with the public knowing the GOP could have helped yet they didn't. Am I mad that 8 Dems capitulated, hell yes, but the same thing happens on the other side at times and this whole shut down being used like this is the real problem, there should not be shutdowns like this Tramp doesnt care that the shutdown happened, hell, he thinks he can do what he wants anyway and congress isn't stopping him.
