There are sub-genres of horror. I personally like the psychological or fantastical. Not a fan of the gore fest or jump scare type.

For the sub-genres I like, they’re just a slightly different type of fiction that’s thought provoking. You could easily say that Close Encounters of the Third Kind was a horror movie but for the music. Aliens zooming around and abducting people. It’s all about the tonality that the director sets. Or any Indiana Jones movie. Or The Goonies. A slight shift in music, lighting and script and it’s scary instead of fun. My brain is able to sift out these things and enjoy the story.

IMO Steven King is a superb fiction writer. He’s known as a ‘horror’ writer but I’ve never taken his books to be that scary.

Watched episode 1 & 2. Not sure where this show is going and I realized that I never watched the remake of IT. Should I for context?

Read the book. It's not like you have much else to do.

This is a prequel. 1962, set 27 years before the happenings in IT movie1, which is 27 years before the happenings in IT movie2.

Allegedly they're planning to go back another 27 years for season 2...then back another 27 years for the final(?) season...that's as far back as the book goes.

But yes, if you want to watch this series, just watch the 2 movies.

I wish they’d tone it down with the CGI

the graveyard scene looked so bad

and the pattern with Pennywise from the films to this TV series is that every scare involves him rushing towards his victim while growing in size until he becomes some CGI monster

ive got this on my "to watch" list. looking forward to it. ive read the book 3 times and its one of two books that actually scared me while reading (the other being swan song by robert mccarron).

i enjoyed the movies that came out a few years ago, but thought part I was far superior to part II. if i recall, i though part II went way overboard with the CGI and the overall story got too messy. glad they didnt follow the book ending with the gang-bang scene though!

the tv series with jack tripper that came out in 1990 holds up well too. when the movies came out i watched this again (and read the book). tim curry was a pretty damn scary pennywise.

Watched the first episode. Have never liked movies/shows that depend on the death of children as a plot device.

    Not for me.

The quality of the CGI is terrible. We saw CGI 20 years ago that was better. And AI generated video is picture perfect, why can't CGI be as good?

    That's half of Steven King's books/movies/whatever.

You nailed it earlier, this is becoming more and more of a Stranger Things ripoff.

Love the book, loved the 1st movie, liked the 2nd movie (haven't seen the original miniseries in ages)....not loving this. I'll definitely watch it just to see where it goes though.

This thread fools me every time it migrates up...

I open it expecting a reboot of "IT Crowd" or "Derry Girls."

    I’m surprised they’re accepting CGI this bad…it looks like a PS2 game

CGI the quality of those low budget horror movies with no-name actors that Netflix sh*ts out every other week
