The 23-page indictment filed against Clase and Ortiz in the Eastern District of New York lays out the alleged scheme for the pitchers to intentionally throw balls so bettors could wager on pitches to be balls or strikes. It started, prosecutors say, as early as May 2023 with Clase and later included Ortiz.

They face charges of fraud, conspiracy and bribery.

Prosecutors allege that Ortiz was paid $5,000 for throwing an intentional ball June 15 and Clase given $5,000 for facilitating it. They did it again, according to the indictment, June 27. The payment for each on that pitch was $7,000 apiece.

Clase and Ortiz face up to 65 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

what gets me is these athletes doing this stuff for such small amounts of money

    A measly $12k?

even for regular people, $12k is nothing

I don't get it either. It's one thing for college athletes who don't make any NIL money and have no chance of going pro to do something like this. But why would pro athletes making millions risk their career over chump change for them.

Either way they really need to ban micro bets. It's kind of ridiculous you can bet on the outcome of every single pitch or free throw. Ideally there would be no sports gambling but the money is too good for the sports leagues and the tax revenue is probably too good for the states that allows it.

Who could have guessed that when you have the outcome of one simple action put in one player's hand and allow people to bet on it would have a huge potential for criminal activity?

As far as the money, lots of people with money enjoy spending money, so every little bit helps. Also, some of these guys come from nothing and want to support their extended families. So every $12K helps with that too.

Am I the only one who sees the irony in the new team name?

You're probably right. But I always thought they should have chosen Gourdians and adopted the Pumpkin Hat.

Because the major sports leagues & broadcast partners successfully

    1) put a 24/7 casino in everyone's pocket

    2) blast people with nonstop advertising and desperate overtures to join this casino and bet from childhood on up

    3) as part of the larger problem where we now live in a Republic of Scams in which gambling & crypto and just getting your bag is perceived as one of the few ways to find fulfillment and go upwards as the super elite hoard every possible resource and make life impossible for the rest of us
Like when the Johntay Porter thing came out, he was a teenager, with his brain developing in 2018 when they legalized gambling and was told THIS IS GOOD - DO THIS repeatedly.

Maybe it doesn't excuse it but it helps explain it

    This week's news:

Fourteen people were charged for their roles in a multimillion-dollar illegal sports betting ring that involved college athletes and had links to organized crime, New Jersey authorities announced Thursday.

According to the authorities, Joseph "Little Joe" Perna, a member of the Lucchese crime family, and his associates ran a nationwide network of bookmakers who used offshore websites to facilitate approximately $2 million in bets between 2022 and 2024.

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin said several college athletes operated sportsbooks at the direction of Perna's organization. Platkin did not answer questions regarding which colleges or sports were involved in the alleged betting ring.

Both Mims and Mancias have been part of Team LeBron for a long time.

The part about Mims is towards the beginning of the Video.

Mostly workout stuff, but it does show that Mancias has been part of of Team LeBron for a long time.

Needs an act of congress, but the GOP is corrupt at it's core right now and is in the pockets of these companies, we have to get money out of lobbying/politics....

Absolutely! Bribery, Extortion and Insider Trading should be illegal. Some are laboring under the delusion that laws regarding these apply to politicians.
