This feels like a legitimate point, but I'd love to see some examples/proof of this happening with either a democrat or republican. I have a hard time picturing a Republican being so outwardly patriotic about another country while running in America, especially in a primary. But I could absolutely see a liberal doing this with an ethnically white and English speaking constituency and conservative media not giving a flying **** because it's not a bunch of brown people who worship a different god and/or speak a different language.
Marjorie Greene?? She was in an extremely red district. But Greene is a US House Rep with federal legislative power that can impact everyone, not just GA, whereas Mamdani is mayor of NYC, a major position but one whose policies directly affect only the city's residents.
Nobody really cared about her (or Boebert etc) until she won and started saying/doing wild **** though. Their races were not paid attention to by liberals, and their elections and re-elections were not news and did not send liberals into a doomposting circlejerk like Mamdani's has with our conservative friends.
You can thank MAGA's unhealthy and extremely weird level of attention here. It elevates Mamdani's impact to the whole nation. What would have been policies that affect only the city is now a potential model for progressive governance that could ripple outward. The bar they set for him is so low, it's just laughable. Outside of policy to come, the style is so opposite of MAGA: ultra divisiveness and fear vs. ultra welcoming and hope (what I gathered from his victory speech). DSA is now a leg higher up just on those stark differences.
Legit valid point. You're right that the attention didn't come until afterward and was a reaction to their actual behaviors while governing, which gave everyone something directly to react to, not just their internal fears and projections.
